Internal disk on DS101 is defective

Postby int15 » Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:59 pm

Hi,

I started receiving these emails notification last night:

Dear user,

Internal disk on DS101 is defective.

Sincerely,
Synology Disk Station

and
Dear user,

Internal disk on DS101 has an I/O error, it might be caused of bad sectors. Please backup your data in case any data would be lost.

Sincerely,
Synology Disk Station

I can think of 3 scenarios:

1) The new firmware reports error without reason
2) The previous firmware wasn't reporting errors
3) The HD just started having problems and the FW upgrade is unrelated.

Right now, I'm leaning towards 3, but I thought I'd share.
This is the first time I'm receiving email notifications from the DS.

Thanks,

Sorry to hear about your disk! :(

Just thought I'd mention that in the last (not the latest) beta version (417), my DS-106e did not send e-mails. This works in the 424 version.

Well, I took a closer look at the notifications and found something interesting.
Although there are 8 I/O error emails and 2 defective notifications, you can notice that there is still a pattern:

1) 4 I/O errors followed by a defective mail at 9:46PM
2) 4 I/O errors followed by a defective mail at 10:28PM

Now, I know for a fact that there was a power failure last night. I don't have the exact time, but there is a strong chance that those 2 series of email coincided with 2 separate power interruption.
