DS918+ disk speed issue when streaming

Unread post by nyichiban » Tue Aug 07, 2018 6:14 pm

So I have the DS918+ on local network and trying to stream a video file to my computer over 1gb LAN. It stutters, skips and dips in bandwidth. Currently I have 2 x 10TB ironwold in raid 0. I was trying to stream a 1080p video file and I look at the activity in DSM and when it is at 3MB upload it is fine but then it dips to 1MB or even less at time and that causes my file to stutter or stop. Using VLC on my computer. Any ideas or solutions?

EDIT: The file
Format : Matroska
Format version : Version 4 / Version 2
File size : 16.1 GiB
Duration : 1 h 33 min
Overall bit rate : 24.6 Mb/s

I'm assuming you are not posting about the app (this forum)... In a recent thread someone noted that when they stripped out subtitles and other comments and attachments within the MKV, stuttering went away.

Also... MKV doesn't tell us much about the file... what video/audio codecs are contained in the video. Are you transcoding? Disk speed should not be an issue.

It fails to load in DS Video because of the audio that is why I tried to just play it via network.

so you are using vlc and not ds video? Hows your computer connected to your network? Same question for your NAS ofc.

I tried watching it originally via ds video on my shield and it stuttered. I know ds video doesn't work well in some situations so I decided to just stream over my network. In my first post I noted that it is all local network over 1gbit LAN. The only thing I run on wireless are my phones and macbook pros. The DS918 is bonded and MTU set to 1500 if that matters.

Well I can say that those files that you have provided as a sample is nothing special for 918 and its should have the horse power to run it (espacially a simple dlna push).

Maybe you could give a go with another media platform for test (like Plex) or try a different file with different codecs, just to rule out the NAS a problematic device.

Also how are your transfer speeds from NAS to your computer? When you try and copy that same file? Are you saturating that ethernet? If so, then we can rule out network as a problem and focus on the files and/or software.

When transferring I'm getting 100MB/s so that isn't an issue as I thought maybe it was because something messed up on the bonding but that doesn't seem like the issue. All ports are set to 1Gb and checked my router and computer so that can't be the issue. Will give plex a try as well as kodi to see if any of those work better.

Restarted my NAS and played another 4k videofile and it worked fine via DS Video. Looks like I needed to restart the NAS and it went well. However it still lags when I try to play the file via network on a PC using VLC even a 1080p movie that is more than 3GB.
