Plex on DS216j

Unread post by 1045642112 » Sat Jun 16, 2018 1:32 pm

Hi guys,

After reading and searching for hours, I did find out the following:

My DS216j has an ARMv7 CPU and doesn't have Hardware Transcoding.
Because I have encrypted my Photo folder and therefore I can't use Photo Station/DS Photo I thought it was time to try out Plex. Yes, I already wanted to try out Plex and no I don't want to use Photo Station either XD.

I know I need a DS218+ for Hardware Transcoding, therefore I will order a DS218+ later.

For now, I'll stick to my DS216j.

I did the following on my DS216j:

A) I just subscribed for a monthly Plex Pass to try out
B) downloaded Armv7 version (Version 1.13.2.5154 )of Plex from Plex' own website
C) installed manually on my Nas via DSM Package Centre.
D) Opened the following ports via DSM>Security>Firewall>edit rules:

"The most important port to make sure your firewall allows is the main TCP port the Plex Media Server uses for communication:

TCP: 32400 (for access to the Plex Media Server) [required]
The following ports are also used for different services:

UDP: 1900 (for access to the Plex DLNA Server)
TCP: 3005 (for controlling Plex Home Theater via Plex Companion)
UDP: 5353 (for older Bonjour/Avahi network discovery)
TCP: 8324 (for controlling Plex for Roku via Plex Companion)
UDP: 32410, 32412, 32413, 32414 (for current GDM network discovery)
TCP: 32469 (for access to the Plex DLNA Server)
Note: This article is discussing ports in the local firewall of the computer running Plex Media Server. This is not discussing ports on a router."

The link of this source: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201543 ... -firewall/

E) I gave user "plex" permissions to read and write in my Shared Folders that I want to add to my Plex library.
F) I went to the local IP (url link for Plex Media Server) on my WINDOWS LAPTOP (Client) e.g. 192.168.X.XXX:32400
G) I'm now on Plex home screen. Working well, but can't add my Shared Folders to the library
I did try to add "/Volume1/Pics" as a "photo" library in Plex.

When I click on my "photo" library it sais: "There was an unexpected error loading this library
Please visit our forums if you continue to experience problems"

I hope someone can help me how to fix this? What is going wrong?

FWIW, I only became a Plex Pass member after I upgraded to a NAS that would handle transcoding (which, BTW, I've yet to use).

When I installed Plex on my 213j I forwarded zero ports and it worked fine for me (LAN only).I also changed no folder permissions. When I added folders to the Plex libraries, the permission requirements were handled auto-magically.

When I installed Plex on my new NAS I did so without port forwarding or permission settings.

Keeping it simple worked for me.

Hi telos,
Keeping it simple worked for me.
I also tried first without manually opening the ports and checking the permissions, but that didn't work.
My Shared Folders are encrypted, I hope that is not the problem?

Are those shared folders by any chance in you encrypted home folder? If so, try and present the content from some other non home shared folder

And when you start to choose the source of your lib via plex you can see those folders fine in the window presenting the folder structure just fine? Just when you try and add it it throws that error?

Did you check the plex logs for more details?

No, I can't see that at all. Just weird. So I type the location manually eg. volume1/Pics

Very weird, I didn't change anything, but now I've got the following error when I go to homepage of my plex browser:
"The server "Synology" is unreachable. Make sure it's running, double check your network, and try again."

I did check it from DSM, PMS is running though...

If you can't see your volume1 content then its a permission problem. Plex user doesn't have needed permissions on those shared folders.

Regarding your UI access problem it could be that your Plex instalation is having some problems. Are you accessing it via your LAN ip or are you going with app.plex.tv/desktop?

I am accessing it via LAN, but I'm home and my NAS is at my office.
So I have a well working VPN connection that I use daily. I make a VPN connection with office, so I can go into DSM etc... That is the only way from outside my office network, for security reasons.

Is Plex looking for local WINDOWS drives (eg: "C:\" and "D:\" etc...)? I thought that Plex was looking for Linux drives (Shared Folders) in my NAS to list as available source when I try to add folders to my library. So it shouldn't be depending on my pc... Right? If Plex is only looking for WINDOWS drives, than I can understand that it can't find any WINDOWS drives, because my PC at work is turned OFF. Therefore Plex can't see the drives where my media is located. Right?

If that is true, it is weird that a NAS installation is looking for pc drives as source.
Anyway! I would have to look after the weekend. if that is true :)

Any other help is welcome!

TY

If Plex server is hosted on your NAS then it will look/see primary from the location that is accessible to it (your NAS).

Your contenet not being visible is a separate issuse from your server not being visible. Are both problems still active then? Be sure to double check your Plex user permissions and regarding your plex server not being accessible thats a question of a different matter.

Are you able to access your plex server via certain clients at all or it that also a problem atm?

Well, after reading your comment I did double check again and now I only get an error when I click on "photos" (library).

I get the following error:
"There was an unexpected error loading the dashboard"

This message appears when I open Plex via laptop (client) or via LAN (Host 192.168.....).

So, I have a yellow check mark on the very left up of my Plex screen. Behind the "Synology". That is not giving me errors anymore.

Hi guys,

Plex is working well now.
The only thing is Plex is not very keen on handling pictures. It is very slow. Though it is good for music and video's.

So I've got answer from Synology!

WE CAN USE PHOTOSTATION WITH ENCRYPTION! Just turn off Photostation, ecrypt your Shared Folder "Photo" and turn Photostation on again! That did the trick!

Enjoy ;)

Although, I hope it will keep working, otherwise I will update.
