Yeah this fix isn't working for me either. I can update plugins and themes but I can't update wordpress. check again does nothing and the download button says "Download -". Clicking the reinstall button takes me to a white page. I ran the chown command once, rebooted, ran it again -- nothing.

I was able to upgrade to 3.3.1 manually. Should have done that to begin with, it just took a few minutes. Now the update page actually checks for updates and the manual update button says "Download 3.3.1".

WordPress Automatic Upgrade SIMPLE FIX!

Postby hisproudgirl » Wed May 30, 2012 12:29 am

I went through these forums when I started having trouble automatically updating my WordPress blog after moving it to a synology server. For anyone not completely familiar with the hardware of the system, it's too confusing and too much work. As if my miracle, one of my favorite web design blogs figured it out and posted the solution just days ago. I've tried it and it works so I felt obligated to share. Enjoy! Hopefully it solves your upgrading issues, too :D [Note that this only fixed upgrading the WordPress software. It did NOT fix my plugins error. Hopefully I figure it out soon.]

Add the code below to the very end of your wp-config file.

Code: Select all

/** sets up 'direct' method for wordpress, auto update without ftp */
define('FS_METHOD','direct');

Same here. I applied all fixes discussed in this thread (chown change, two additions to wp-config.php) and I am unable to use WP 3.3's automatic update mechanism. WP 3.5 is now available. I guess I'll try a manual install of that and give up on Synology's package.

When I see how old this post is, it's incredible that the issue is still there!

Thanks to PedroT though, the solution works perfectly.

I faced the same issue when trying to copy a online wordpress to my own synology server. I confirm, the issue is definitely linked to write premission on the folder of wordpress.

To solve the issue, I checked the permission given on the default wordpress installation and I saw that user/group owner were set to "http". So, I did the same on the folder where the wordpress I copied was stored and it worked.

To list folder in your web folder and identify user & group that owns the folder where your default wordpress is stored, ssh or telnet your synology and run :
> ls -al /volume1/web/
drwxrwx--- 7 nobody nobody 4096 Apr 13 16:57 msit
drwxr-xr-x 9 root root 4096 Apr 13 17:39 phpMyAdmin
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Apr 13 15:12 web_images
drwxr-xr-x 6 http http 4096 Apr 13 15:22 wordpress

Above you can see that owner user & group of "wordpress" is "http". I just applied the same rights to the folder storing the wordpress I copied from the web (msit)

> chown -R http:http /volume1/web/msit

Then it worked :)

I was killing myself trying everything. Changing owner to nobody and http through both SSH and inside DSM, but with no succes.
After I finally found out that my group http did not have read+write rights somehow (?), only read-rights. I changed this to read+write in the control panel>groups. Then I changed the rights to http:http for my whole web folder through SSH (putty), and now it works!

PedroT wrote:Hi all,

I had the same problem with my DS209.
The problem is with the file/folder owner. By default the web server software uses 'nobody' as the file/folder owner, when you install wordpress using a network share the system assumes resets the name of the file owner to that of the login you used to access the share preventing the web server software making any changes, that's the reason why the automatic update feature doesn't work, even if you input the correct FTP login information in wordpress.
To correct the problem you must enable the terminal service in the Synology system and login as root using a SSH software.
After that you write this:

chown -R nobody:nobody /volume1/web/wordpress

You can change the /volume1/web/wordpress to the specific structure you have.

After this you should be able to use the automatic upgrade feature of wordpress.

Hope this helps,
Pedro Tróia

I'm having the same issue. Does this solution still work, and if so how do you SSH into your DiskStation? Also, how should my permissions be set in User and Groups? I access my DS with a Mac if that matters. Thanks!

Wow! This worked perfectly. I only wish I would have found this solution BEFORE I totally screwed up my WordPress install. Thanks for posting your solution.

The ONLY bad thing about the solution above, and I don't know whether it's a WordPress or Synology issue, is there is no progress bar or any other indication that the upgrade is working until the very end. There are a few times that I thought the upgrade had crashed but decided to wait it out. Fortunately, every time it has worked, albeit a little slower than I expected.
