nClone - disk cloning software bundle

Postby Max_nl » Mon Apr 02, 2012 2:05 pm

We created nClone, a software bundle to turn your NAS into a disk cloning appliance.
Allowing you to backup up your entire disk including the operating system to your NAS (instead of individual files).
As well as deploying a single disk image to multiple computers provided they have the same hardware, e.g. if you want to install the same operating system to a classroom full of computers.

nClone acts as a PXE boot server.

Image

After you installed it on your NAS, you can start the cloning software by instructing your computer to boot off the network.
No need to mess with installation cd-roms or USB sticks.

Image

nClone is basically a slightly modified version of the industry standard open source cloning tool Clonezilla.
It automatically connects Clonezilla to a shared folder on your NAS for your convenience, and then lets you use the standard features like savedisk and restoredisk.

Image

It also provides a simple window in DSM to let you rename and delete captured images.

Information and .spk download: http://www.nclone.com/
Should run on any Synology NAS that has DSM 6.0

Current limitations:

  • This is beta software. Use at your own risk!
  • Assumes the NAS has only 1 network connection with 1 IP-address.
  • nClone works fine with any existing DHCP server in your network, but is currently incompatible with Synology's DHCP server add-on. (because it listens to the same port we use).
  • Computers you want to clone must be in the same subnet as the NAS.

Licensing:

The basic edition can be used free of charge, for any purpose.
However -if there is enough demand- we may also release a commercial version with features aimed at organizations managing a large number of computers in the future.

what settings in the router did you made to make this work, and what did you do at the synology nas? I tried it with an draytek vigor 2130N router and Nclone didnt response.

It should not be necessary to make any changes to your router.
(You need to have a DHCP server in your network, but that is the default setting for all routers.)

Only need to enable PXE boot in the BIOS of the computer you want to clone, no other special settings should be needed.

What network card/PXE boot firmware are you using?
Does it show "Intel UNDI" on boot, or another vendor?

Make sure MDT/WDS is disabled/set to not respond to any computer.
Having more than one PXE server active at the same time can conflict.

Can i set some settings in your ptog?

There are not any settings that should need changing.

Does the Intel network boot screen just show a progress indicator for a minute or so, and then time out?

Or does it show IPs like in the following screenshot:

Image

It should show the IP-address of your router under DHCP server, and your NAS IP under "PROXY IP"

Also the nClone log in DSM package manager should show "up & running"

IP-address should be handed out by your router, which acts as a DHCP server.
And then additional boot information should be given by nClone, which acts as a so called proxy DHCP server.

Unfortunately there is no easy way to debug such things.
If you have any virtualization software like Virtualbox on your machine, you could try network booting a virtual machine (make sure the network mode is set to "bridge"), and sniff the netwerk packets it sends and receives from within the host system.
But that requires some technical knowledge about network protocols.

It needs DSM 4.0

The 108j has an older version?

Package itself doesn't have any architecture dependent code.
It's just a couple of PHP and shell scripts.

Perhaps the software that comes with DSM 4 differs by model though.
Package assumes dnsmasq is included with the system software.

edmond wrote:And is see that if you remove th eappliaction, the share still exist.

That is recommended by Synology.
It doesn't have an option to just unshare the folder, but keep it contents.
(could be that the user only wanted to uninstall nClone, but keep the captured images for use with other software)

http://download.synology.com/download/d ... 120326.pdf

Removing the shared folder is not recommended as it will also remove the user’s
personal data.

Dnsmasq is not included in Ds108J serie, Therefore the package doesn't work on this.
