Here we go again. We should have known better. Everything is broken again with release DSM 6.1.1-15101
Everything worked fine with 6.1 some weeks ago :(

I've installed from here http://spk.diablos-netzwerk.de, version 5.0.38.114632-1

I had VirtualBox running fine, but broke on the latest DSM 6.1.1-15101 Update.

This issue, makes VirtualBox running on your Synology NAS more or less useless if it breaks on every firmware update.
Especially when looking at Synologys willingness or lack off to release the needed Kernel Source.

Well that's just great. I just received my DS916+, which I purchased partly because I saw how Virtual Box ran on DSM... And now that part is not working.
I guess automatically updating DSM should be turned off, if Synology is scre**** over people with every update coming to the system.

Hey all,

I understand since everyone updated to the latest dsm version virtualbox doesn't work.

For those that haven't yet updated (phew), can anyone advise on how i can get W10 working on VB?

I'm baffled, as any other OS works, but that.

The process i follow is:-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlEU7bA_sQ0

Exactly the same as that, just adding a different ISO.

The problem i face is that nothing happens in the preview window, and not much is being shown on the log? It's utilizing the ram and cpu, but it's not asking me to change the language and proceed etc etc.

Just the normal windows 10 logo, and that's it.

Anyone experienced this issue before?

@Sunnyknight

When I installed Windows on VirtualBox on my synology DS, I could not get the console or preview to work, you have to use Remote desktop as showed 4:29 in the video you linked to.
Be aware of the mouse offset. After windows is installed, you have to install VirtualBox Guest Additions to get the mouse working as it should.

Can somebody explain me why virtual box would be run on the ds? What would be the purpose?
I ask this because i cannot figure out that you would accept the performance of a 6 w cpu like present in ds916, or a celeron like in ds 716, (around 3 times slower than i3) for e.g. windows in a virtual box and all the hassle of running it unsupported by synology.
most people would just buy a brix or a nuc with I3 and a ssd, put ubuntu with virtual box on it. They end up with a faster, cheaper and much more robust virtual machine.
I am just curious.
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

You're right about that it isn't very stable at the moment since kernels keep getting updated and usually breaks the installation. It's pretty frustrating.

But still,it's fun being able to run a vm on your NAS. I use it for testing purposes or just being able to run other stuff than DSM-apps, even with crippled performance.

My DS716+II (8GB) with VirtualBox installed replaced 2 Raspberry Pi3. The DS716+II is way faster than the Rpi 3 even running Debian under VirtualBox.
I just recently installed VIrtualBox on the DS and did not know about the problems about firmware updates. All ran fine until Synology released the software update, and then i realised that this setup was not the way to go.
Because of that I have just ordered an Intel NUC which will arrive later this week :-)

Ah snap! Cancelled and removed the image a zillion times trying with different settings.

Will try that now, appreciate the response.

@eaz The reason i'm reluctant to buy another machine is because i am very tight on funds. I understand the implications of having the NAS and trying to run virtual machines off it. I simply cannot justify buying another £100 item. I just want to run a ultra small game server for myself and 3 other people. I tried docker but i could not get my head around it.

Anyone able to help? I'm pulling my hair out right now.

As my previous post, i followed all the steps, and i still can't get W10 64bit to install.

It just hangs with the W10 logo and a black screen behind it.

I completely removed the volume and made a new one with VB installed on it. Still diddly squat. Anyone able to tell me where i'm going wrong?

What i have realised though, is that this time round, i don't have any 'homes' folder? Any ideas?

Again, i followed this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlEU7bA_sQ0

Just a head scratcher

EDIT: Windows 7 works fine again, is it that windows 10 is not supported yet? or??

Not sure if anyone here is aware but, Synology rebranded Virtual DSM Manager to Virtual Machine Manager and it now supports Windows, Linux, and Other OS virtual machines, not just Virtual DSM instances anymore. Just tried it and it works great, despite having fewer options than VirtualBox.

As before (VirtualDSM) also VMM uses qemu as its base.

Synology in the release notes states that the installation is not downgradable. This make me thing that while virtualbox is installed onto the primary OS (DSM) and let you then virtualize others, VMM is installed as minimal basic OS and also the main DSM is now a VM.
I've not tried it because all my suitable NASes are production ones.

Well I'm not entirely sure if it does what you state. I do feel like I/O is not as good as with VirtualBox. I feel like it's slower, I/O-wise. Maybe it's because it's a different engine. I'm not familiarized with VirtualBox or QEMU for that matter. I'm more of VMware/Microsoft user.

That's a shame, I was hoping to run a tiny Windows Server 2012 or 2016 on my network, but I wasn't going to buy another PC just to do that. (The goal is to just have WSUS running, so I can control which updates get shoved onto the Windows 10 boxes now that you don't get to pick and choose from a list from the target machine.)

Try the new VMM package that is in beta, should be able to replace VirtualBox.
