Local UPS was Plugged out

Unread post by wagswvu » Sun Jun 05, 2011 7:44 pm

I just bought a DS1511+ and so far I'm loving it. Just one question, I connected my spare APC XS 1300 UPS up to the disk station. When I go into the Power settings and select the UPS tab, if I click on the Device Information button everything shows up correctly and I enable UPS support. However, I just discovered that when the unit switches over to battery the enable UPS support becomes unchecked and in the log their is an entry the says "Local UPS was Plugged out. Any idea why it's doing this? The just I got from their website was that if it's detecting it in the device information it should be compatible.

I am having a similar problem- the same thing happens but when my ds411j enters hibernation. HAven't tested it when using the battery power from my Tripp Lite UPS. Did you ever figure it out or receive any type of response?

I noticed the same thing in my system log yesterday:

Warning 2011/07/31 11:09:53 SYSTEM Local UPS was plugged out.
Warning 2011/07/31 11:09:53 SYSTEM Local UPS was plugged out.
Warning 2011/07/31 10:56:45 SYSTEM Local UPS was plugged out.

I just purchased and installed an APC BR1000G a few days prior (7/27), and hadn't noticed any trouble with it. I only stumbled across these entries while reviewing the log file.

Some questions for the Synology gurus:

1) Is it possible to broaden the scope of the email notifications to include all "Warning" level system log events, so I would know when this happened?
2) Why is there a log entry for the UPS being "plugged out," but no similar log entry for the UPS being "plugged in"?
3) How could it be "plugged out" three times in a row, in short order, without having been "plugged in" in between these events?
4) Is there anything I can do to help diagnose the problem? It hasn't repeated since those three events on 7/31.

And here we went again:

Warning 2011/08/02 21:43:31 SYSTEM Local UPS was plugged out.
Warning 2011/08/02 21:35:20 SYSTEM Local UPS was plugged out.
Warning 2011/08/02 21:35:19 SYSTEM Local UPS was plugged out.

And this time, when I go into the "Power" section of the control panel, the UPS tab informs me that "No UPS is connected." That's just not true: when I open the System Information window, the list of External Devices includes "Uninterruptable Power Supply - American Power Conversion".

This makes me think this is a Synology issue, not an APC issue.

Synology staffers - any thoughts on how I can pursue a diagnosis?

Josh, Same thing happens to me- I have a ton of UPS was plugged out messages. It only happens when I have the HDD set to hibernate- when they hibernate it somehow severs the UPS connection and I get the plugged out messages and then have to recheck/enable UPS support. I turned off hibernation and it stays on- everything seems fine.

Don't think there will be much response in the forums on this as I posted my problem a while ago with no response so I sent in a support email. They have been quick to respond, but want remote access to my NAS for further testing. Since you have the same issue, I am inclined to believe it is an issue with DSM/Synology as you said (I am using a Tripp Lite UPS). Now I just have to decide if I want to allow their tech remote access or live with hibernation off for the hard drives and hope the issue is resolved in a future DSM update.

If possible, please let me know/post any resolution you may come across.

I too opened a support ticket. At support's request, I sent them a debug kernel log. They've responded with a request that I try a different USB port on the back of the NAS, and/or a different USB cable between the NAS and the UPS. I haven't yet reconfigured my USB connection (happily, I have a second APC UPS, so obtaining a weird proprietary RJ45-USB plug won't be an issue), but then again, I have also not yet seen a third instance of the UPS being 'plugged out.'

The last time my UPS was plugged out, I couldn't check the box to re-enable the UPS, so I wound up rebooting the NAS. I'm waiting to reconfigure the USB until I see another entry in the log, so I'll know that rebooting didn't fix it (not that I expect it would). Since the first two times it happened were a few days apart, it might take a while to diagnose.

So far, support hasn't asked for root access to all my personal files - not sure how willing I'd be to give it to them either. No offense, synology staffers, but c'mon - I don't care that much about the movies and TV shows, but all my machines back up to the NAS, and I've got all my financial documents, medical records, etc. on there.

So it happened again, without changing the USB cable or USB port, shortly after rebooting the Diskstation. I've switched the USB cable with one from an identical UPS downstairs, and have plugged it into a different USB port. Probably just a matter of time before I have another report for Synology.

Yeah, I had to send in the kernel log and all that first as well. Do you have your HDD's set to hibernate? I turned hibernation off and I no longer get the "plugged out" message, so it's looking pretty obvious that something happens when hibernation happens to me.

I would like to have the techs check my situation remotely, but I am just not comfortable doing that.

Well, it happened again (6 in a row) with a different USB cable in a different USB port, so I sent off another debug log to support.

I do have my hard drives set to hibernate after 1 hour - based on the infrequency of the plugged out message, though, I'm guessing that hibernation doesn't cause the plugging out in my case--at least not every time it hibernates. Plus, based on the times, it doesn't seem likely to happen when drives go into hibernation (e.g., we were streaming video from the device when the most recent plugged out messages showed up in the log).

Still, I may try disabling that next to see what, if any, impact it may have.

That looks just like mine when I have the HDD set to hibernate. I don't get it with hibernation off, but my HDD don't hibernate now. That actually might be a good thing.

Anyway, I bet there are a lot more people who have this same problem, they just don't know it without checking the log. Like I said before, hopefully Synology will fix it in an upcoming DSM update. Otherwise, you will probably have to go without hibernation like I am.

Well, according to Synology:
Hello Joshua,

This a recognized issue. It will be fixed in the DiskStation Manager 3.2 official release. This should be ready by the end of September.

Local UPS plugged out error

Unread post by ptr727 » Sun Sep 04, 2011 3:51 am

Hi

DS2411+, 12 x Hitachi UltraStar 3TB, RAID6
CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD UPS
DSM 3.1-1748

I was looking in the log, and there was an error that says "Local UPS was plugged out".
The UPS was not removed, and there was no power outage.

If I look in system information, it lists the UPS as an external UPS device.
If I look under power UPS configuration, is says there is no UPS connected.

If I unplug the UPS USB cable, I get another UPS was unplugged error.
If I plug the USB cable back in, the UPS shows up again in the power options, and I can re-enable it.

If the system thinks there is no UPS, that is bad for it will run until the UPS dies, instead of shutting down.

How do I prevent this problem?

I see 3.2 has been released, will try it and see if the problem goes away.
