Encryption, Shared Folders, Home Folder

Unread post by CapIsland » Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:23 am

I have the DS218j with DSM 6.2-23739 Update 2.

I have read this, which states: Flexible encryption: You can encrypt pre-existing shared folders, including the homes folder, for enhanced security.

QUESTION 1: How do you encrypt the home folder?

QUESTION 2: How do you encrypt existing shared folders?

Oddly enough, I had already read that, but it spoke only of creating the shared folders, and I read somewhere that they could not be encrypted afterwards. I did not know the creation wizard could be used for editing the drive after creation. Thanks.

That was on earlier DSM versions

Having a problem with encryption of homes folder. Everything else is fine but this one keeps complaining about the file name length.
Running these commands using admin account doesn't reveal anything to fix (from MacOS):

Code: Select all

find . -type f -iname "*" |awk -F'/' 'length($NF)>143{print $0}'
find . -type d -iname "*" |awk -F'/' 'length($NF)>143{print $0}'
Don't use any CJK characters but some Cyrillic and punctuation characters are present in the file names. The longest file name is 99 English characters.
Any clue how else I can find where it stops, like a log @ NAS or elsewhere?
Edit: DSM 6.2-23739 Update 2 @ DS415+

Copying all files with names longer than 43 characters into another already encrypted shared folder succeeded, meaning the file names are ok.

Code: Select all

find -E . \( -type f -or -type d \) -and -regex '.*/[^/]{44,}' -exec cp '{}' /Volumes/encrypted/test \;
Go figure.

For anyone in a similar position not able to encrypt existing shared folder...

Using File Station, I have moved users data to another already encrypted share while keeping the top level "home" folders. Then completed the homes folder encryption and moved the data back. All completed successfully with no errors about the file name length.

This proves my suspicion that there's a bug in Synology program estimating size / checking the file names before encryption of an existing folder.

You're checking for length 143 here, while the next posting mentions length 43.

Yes, I know. Was trying everything to get it working even looking for files with shorter names.
