Advice on DS Choice

Postby Tacitus » Fri Mar 29, 2013 6:14 pm

Hi all:

I'm looking at purchasing a DS212J and wonder if someone could give me some advice.

My main usage is backup, but I'm really interested in using one for sync purposes particularly with my iCal and Contacts on my iPhone and iPad, since I prefer to keep my data local if at all possible. Hence no love for iCloud.

So:

1. Will the above push updates to/from my iPhone/iPad (both IOS6) and if so, would I require any add ons (DSCloud?)

2. Will the DS212J be adequate (processor type/speed)- obviously subject to the disk size installed - or would one of the other models be more suitable?

3. If I outgrow this and move up to (say) a DS413, is it possible to take the two disks from the DS212, put them in the DS413 together with an additional new disk(s) without problems?

I've looked at Synology, Drobo and QNap and the Syn devices appear the most versatile. Certainly the Synology reviews on Geekanoids are very positive. https://www.youtube.com/user/davomrmac

1. I think so, http://www.synology.com/support/tutorials_show.php?q_id=463

2. I think you fast outgrow it. I would avoid J models at all times.

3. Yes, altough its not a offical method. But others have stated that they were able to do this without any precaution
