DS413 or DS412+ which would you chose?

Unread post by ppsy » Wed Jun 06, 2012 7:05 am

Hi guys & gals,

I was about to purchase the DS412+ but now heard about this DS413.
http://www.computex.biz/bestchoice/Winn ... index=3885

Price aside (not yet released for the DS413), should I wait? 2 things caught my eyes: encryption clearly mentioned on the DS413 (missing from the DS412+) and 5 times less power during hibernation (3W for the DS413 vs. 15W for the DS412+).

Although I have not seen the specs for the DS413, I assume from the '+' that the DS412+ has a more powerful CPU and more memory, but I don't think I need such power.

Any idea of the usual time lapse between such an announcement and the product being actually available for sale?

I think it is unusual for Synology to release details of next year's model in June.

I am also very suspicious of any website that hands out awards when the technical specifications, performance and price have not been confirmed...
Model: DS508; F/W: DSM 4.0-2265; HDD: 5 x Seagate 1TB ST31000340NS (JBOD; Basic); Link Aggregation: Enabled (Gigabit)

Camera: IQinVision IQeye 702; Other: Squeezebox Boom and Classic (SSODS 4.9.1 / SBS 7.5.2-31632)

Not enough info to speculate. I think the "biggest" news that you can see from the Synology press release is that it has much better encryption performance, probably because it's doing it hardware in the Freescale CPU they are now using. But it doesn't provide any details about the rest of the performance (non-encrypted). So no way to make an informed decision.

The DS412+ does have encryption, so it's not missing from that device, but the performance isn't as good as what is listed in the press release on the DS413.

HDclown, well spotted.
So waiting for the DS413 vs buying now the DS412+ only if:
1) concerned about energy savings (but this is very minor)
2) lower price with a less powerful CPU
3) higher speed for encrypted data

But you have to wait till October 2012.
In my case, I will probably go for the immediate purchase of the DS412+.

Where did you get October from? Not seen that anywhere. I personally think I'm going to wait for the DS413. I don't need the power of the DS412+ now that I've decided to get a mini server to handle transcoding and other stuff, and so would rather get the cheaper DS413.

Directly from Synology Marketing team

So... October to be on the safe side...

Hello,

I am in the same boat than ppsy. I was planning to replace my old DS209+II with the DS412+ when I saw news about this DS413...

Do we have more information about it ? Price and tech specs for example ?

The less energy hungry hibernation mode and the encryption performance boost are useless for me so for the moment I would go for the DS412+.

Thanks

I'm struggling to wait! I really need a NAS asap, but I really don't need the extra features of the DS412+, so it would be a waste of money for the premium, but I also want hot-swappable so don't want to go for a DS411 or DS411j! Been waiting for the DS412 (now the DS413 as we know it as) since Feb!

I am hoping the 413 and 413+ have USB3.0 on the front panel. If so then I'll consider upgrading. Until then my DS408 will continue to serve my needs.

I also hope we'll see an updated DSM with TRIM support to allow us to better leverage SSDs.

I was wrong in my initial comment that I did not need the extra power of the DS412+.

I now realize the various things that can be done with a Synology NAS (I am a first time buyer). I was particularly blown away by the Plex application that enables you to watch any video stored on your NAS from any place in the world. Plex Media Server (the app running on the NAS) does require power, especially when many people are watching different videos on the NAS at the same time.

I am not saying that the DS413 won't be powerful enough to support Plex. It might. But for a total seamless Plex experience, I think you should spend the extra dollars on the DS412+ if you can afford it.

My 2 cents.

I'm in the same predicament, currently don't own a NAS but want to buy a 4 bay from Synology.

Don't want to buy the DS411J, with 128MB RAM it doesn't give me the confidence it'll last the next few years. Suspect it will struggle with DSM 4.0 installed.

Right now I have the option of spending more for the DS412+, or waiting for the DS413 to be released replacing the DS411. If they release a DS413J that would be an option too, depending on specs.

Want it for home use only, storing all my media and providing some server functionality.

If your "media" includes video, go for the DS412+ and use Plex Media Server (runs only on Intel CPUs like on the DS412+) - this is an amazing app. I use it everyday!

It certainly includes video, I currently have it stored on a windows server with shared network drives which are accessible from my WDTV media player.

I've read about plex, don't see a use for it in my home network. I can see it could be useful for viewing movies while mobile. Do you stream it over 3G to an iPhone or Android Handset?

Also, if you are transcoding video using Plex what quality video? My content is mostly 720P..

Problem with using Plex on a Synology box is on higher bitrate files it can struggle from what I've read elsewhere. Remember that the Atom processor is pretty powerful for a NAS, but, it's not massively more powerful than Pentium 4's, and Transcoding etc isn't its strong suite!

Also Plex is only really worth doing if you have a device where you can run the whole Plex Media Centre experience, then it really shines. I personally bought a Mac Mini to run the server and client, and intend to get the DS413 to handle storage. The Mac Mini works brilliant with Plex, very slick interface
