HiDrive is ????

Unread post by mnielsen » Thu Nov 17, 2016 8:00 pm

I signed up for a free HiDrive account, seemed to be the default option which is fine I like to try before I buy.

Installed the HiDrive app and wanted to test backup....not working, after long time it turns out that that some funny place in the HiDrive account settings you need to enable the rsync protocol!?

Turns out rsync is not possible using the free account, so trying to upgrade I get an error. Anyhow I try - same error!

How can Synology pick a preferred vendor for backup that does not even offer a trial account, and where the setup does not work out of the box.

I'm puzzled...

I wasn't aware that Synology picked any preferred vendors. There are partnerships, sure, but it's typically simple co-marketing and not "YOU MUST USE THIS." There's plenty of other cloud backup options to explore.
If you need technical support please use this form: https://account.synology.com/support/support_form.php
Synology does not consistently browse this forum for technical support, feature requests, or any other inquiries as it notes at the top of the page. Please use the proper channels when you need help from someone at Synology.

I can imagine your reaction. In defence of Hidrive: The hidrive site is very clear in explaining that you need the protocols to be able to use hidrive with an Rsync, webdav or other connection with a NAS.

Also in defence of Hidrive, it is by far the best external storage I've tried (I tried Hubic, megadrive, idrive (also ok), amazon, google, crashplan, and a few more).
So yes the lowest cost offer they have is 2.5euro/month for 250GB including the protocols, but it is super fast, dependable and with great privacy. Their app in the synology package center is top quality.
I have no commercial benefit to defend strato, it is just a great dependable, german style service...
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

Ended up picking Amazon Drive which works perfect, good to have build-in client encryption option as it is hard to understand privacy policies of US based data centers.
I would have picked German HiDrive if that was my only concern.
