Here is how to install a new USB printer not previously supported using Mac OSX 10.5.6

I have searched the internet endlessly to try to figure out how to print from Mac OSX using my Canon IP4500 printer plugged into a Synology 207+.

I finally managed and here is how:

First go to this website and download/install the newest CUPS drivers: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php
I used Gutenprint version 5.2.3.

Second, access the CUPS printerserver using a standard internet browser (I used Firefox). Type in this address: http://localhost:631/.

To install a printer just press add printer. Fill in Name, Location, and Description. Press Continue.

Under Device, choose Internet Printing Protocol (Ipp) and press Continue

Now fill in the printer address: ipp://User-name:Password@IP-address/usbprinter
User-name and Password is the name and password used to login to your synology product´s web-access.
IP-address is the address of your Synology product (e.g. 156.345.167.207)
/usbprinter means the queue name. Press Continue.

Choose the Make of the printer; in my case Canon

Choose the model. Canon PIXMA IP4500 is included in the new Gutenprint drivers previously installed.
Press Add printer
Voila! You can now print...

I hope this will save time for many people trying to get a NON-Postscript USB-printer to work using Mac OSX 10.5.6.

Best regards

Thanks for these instructions.

I had some problems though, the print job would not finish properly and there was a message about the network host being busy.

Someone else had used the used the 'Windows printer via Samba' option instead and this also worked for me.

In URL use:
smb://user:password@ip-adress/usbprinter

Cheers

I tried both options. The first gave me the same message of "Network is busy". The second stalled after trying to open the printer connection and then reverted to "Printer Ready" without actually printing. ANy other suggestions?

I got my Non-Postscript HP Color Laserjet 3500 to print while connected to my DS209j from my MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.4.x Tiger.

I downloaded the 3 disk images from this page, and followed the simple usage instructions which pretty much you follow the recommended synology instructions for adding your printer and you select the new driver for your printer.

I downloaded the required software, installed it and then went to "add printer" per the instructions. I am trying to add a HP Officejet J3600 but just for use of the printer function. After clicking on the plus sign and selecting Default Printer, the window that I need to fill out is all grey and only Adobe PDF shows up in the window. I've added the printer, but when I try a test, it appears as if something will print, but never does.

Anyone have a suggestion?

Can you provide for concrete information?

OS version? What printing protocol you're using? etc...

See my signature, using a MacBook with OS 10.5.X

Not sure how to answer the protocol question...

I used the "Default" as the directions instructed. I wouldn't know how to add it using the other options. But willing to try...

Google or your computer's OS manual will guide you in adding printers using various protocols

Which would be best to use in this situation? Would it make a difference from using the Default option?

lpd/lpr, tcp/ip, ipp, and smb should all work on your mac for adding the printer.

When you open up the window to add the printer, Click the plus sign '+' to add a printer. Then you have two options, Default Browser of IP Printer. If your on the Default Browser screen then hold down the "alt options" key while clicking other printers at the bottom or whatever it says. Don't let go of the alt/options key until the new window opens up. This will allow you to select advanced options such as the protocols listed above.
