DSM 1742 upgrade; My 211j will not start

Unread post by Moddy » Thu Jun 09, 2011 12:08 pm

Hi,

I have successfully updated my 211j to DSM 1742, but after the upgrade, the 211j starts, but instead of 'stabilising' after much blinking, it shuts down.

I have tried the reset option, also with a fresh download of 1742, but the same happens every time.

I cannot downgrade the DSM, and I cannot proceed...

Any suggestions?

You can open a ticket and they will help you downgrade (if that is needed)

No, Synology will not help you to downgrade the FW because this is not supported. But they will do everything to help you to find the cause of your problem and to solve it.

Hi, thanks for input.

I have opened a ticket, and got the answer as quoted below.
However, I cannot see how this could work, as they obviously want to access the DS
remotely, but how can they do that when it is not staying on?
I simply dont understand....

I have seen others tricking the NAS into installing older software, but again, as it wont
stay on, how can i modify files??

It would seem that the 1742 software reacts to SMART info from one of the disks. They are both brand new (2 x WD Caviar Green - 2 TB - 64 MB - SATA (WD20EARS)), but I recall that one of them
was not displaying info regarding temperature etc.

Anyone know a fix for the disks??

Please?

1. As the downgrade can't be performed, we will suggest a telnet by this way:
Please follow the steps below:

1. Power off DiskStation (DS) and take out all disks
2. Power on DS without disks
3. Run Assistant and perform the installation with the latest DSM patch v.1742 and Assistant. You could get them in Download Center of Synology web site
3. Under this way, the installation will be failed but the telnet will be open
4. Please open the port 23 on your router for DS NAT IP (ex. 192.168.xx.xx or 10.0.xx.xx)and we could login via telnet
5. Please insert the disks to DS and provide us the following information

Remote Access Instructions
===============================================================
1. Standard Ports we need you to open: 23
(Please see this link on how to forward your ports, and then select the TELNET application:
http://www.portforward.com/english/rout ... rindex.htm)

2. WAN IP Address of your Synology NAS:
[Please go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ to fill in the above information and check if the port is open or not]

===============================================================
2. Once we could connect to your DS via telnet by the step1, the engineer will modify the system and turn off the shutdown caused by the disk temperature

3. Then we will reboot your DS and it will follow the normal procedure to boot up. If the cause is the temperature, this time DS should not shut down itself automatically.

Well I have a DS211j, and when I upgraded to firmware 1742 it booted and worked well. But I noticed that it started to hang. No acess via web n and also not via telnet/ssh and the shutdown button also didn´t worked. Only removing the power cord.

The solution was to downgrade to firmware 1613, because it worked for months with no problem with this firmware.

In this forum there is a how-to downgrade.

So far is ok
