WD 8TB Red + DS918+ = vibration ?

Unread post by IanHx » Fri Sep 14, 2018 7:48 am

Have DS918+ with 4 x 8TB WD reds.
Have tried putting Velcro in the trays.
Have tried using proper screws instead of the side clips.
Have tried standing the unit on bubble wrap to dampen vibrations.

But there is still too much vibration / resonance for it to be usable in a home setting.

Are the disks supposed to produce this level of vibration ?
If I lightly touch the front of the disk caddy I can feel it mildly vibrating.
Don't know if this is just a design flaw with those fancy opening lever fronts, or if my HDDs are flawed ?

By comparison my old DS413 with WD 3TB reds had zero vibration.

Any advice on how to kill the annoying resonance/ vibration hum on the DS918+ ?

I have 4TB ones in my 918 and apart from them being a bit more noisy then 3TB ones, I have 0 vibrations on the casing as it is. Maybe you cold try and put some more rubber layers under the NAS to make it not pass so much vibrations.

Like Rusty, I'm using 4TB reds, but in a 418play. Fan setting for Cool. All is quiet, and vibration not detected (NAS is on my desktop, so I would be well aware of vibration).

Compared the 918+ drive caddy with the 413 caddy, and couldn't help noticing that the old ones had a lump of foam at the end of the tray (nearest the front). Added a lot more Velcro, and placed the NAS on the carpeted floor, and it's had some effect - now the vibration hum is only annoying if you're in the room underneath it !

Tried putting one of the 8TB drives in the old NAS, made some but not massive difference to noise.
After much consideration I'll just have to swap round the intended roles and use the older, quieter one in the living room and consign the 918+ to backup duties.

Suspect the bottom line is that the current range of Synology NAS boxes wasn't created to cope with the racket from the current big capacity WD drives - or at least not enough to put the box next to the TV for use as a media server.
