Re: Lightroom Export Plugin: PhotoStation Upload

Unread post by simenon » Sun Aug 13, 2017 6:04 pm

I have this strange problem that i can upload new photo's with no problem. But if i modify them and re-publish them they fail in uploading to photostation. Ithought it was a permission problem but the user has read/write permission. Anyone has any thoughts on what might the problem ?

Finally figured this out. Apparently the characters [ and ] cause a problem, as soon i removed them i was able to update.

Strangely with those characters i am allowed to add new and delete, but not change/update

The Wiki does not mention these characters [ and ]. It looks like with updating that the characters are not properly escaped.

Note: Collection and Collection Set names may include characters that are illegal within a pathname. Therefore, all illegal characters will be substituted by their hexadecimal ascii value as string '0xnn'. Illegal characters are:
\ / : ? * " < > |

Hi Simenon,
thanks for investigating the issue! I see the exact same behaviour here when I'm using a directory name with '['and ']'. The same is true when using the Synology Photo Station Uploader.

These two characters are absolutely OK for album names, in general. They don't need escaping and URL-encoding was OK: the first upload works fine and the target album has correct name.
The issue is on the server side: the Upload API doesn' t work correct in this case.
In the server response you can see this unexpected non-JSON cleartext warnings:
Warning: rmdir(/var/services/photo/Test/[LD] Zoetersbout/@eaDir/2017_07_14_DMC-FZ1000_1110926.JPG): Directory not empty in /volume1/@appstore/PhotoStation/photo/include/asst_file_upload.php on line 199

Warning: rename(/volume1/photo/@eaDir/ASST_PHOTO_UPLOAD_TMP_DIR/ASST_TMP_EA_n6hqehlk014k52orugp9efqim3,/var/services/photo/Test/[LD] Zoetersbout/@eaDir/2017_07_14_DMC-FZ1000_1110926.JPG): Directory not empty in /volume1/@appstore/PhotoStation/photo/include/asst_file_upload.php on line 205
which is followed by the expected JSON response
{"success":true,"err_msg":"warning: rename tmp EA folder fail: \/var\/services\/photo\/LimboDiver\/[LD] Zoetersbout\/@eaDir\/IMG_0160.jpg","duplicate_folder":false}
It's clearly a bug in the Photo Station Upload API and somebody should inform Synology about this defect.

Besides that, I will add a note on this issue to the Wiki article.

Thanks, Martin
P.S: Found some cool dive videos from LimboDiver@youtube. I'm curious about the dive spot Zoetersbout...

Hi

many thanks for developping this useful tool.
I read your notes, the forum, but didn't find what I was looking for.
All my photos are on the Nas, LR is cataloguing everything from a MAC but nothing on local drive.
I want to resync all LR tags with the PS nas but whithout any changes for the actual directory structure on the nas.
I thought publishing with Check was the solution but apparently not.
Is there a way to do that?

Thx

Hi rodtaq,
if I got you right, you already have all your photo originals on the diskstation under the /photo share, correct?

In that case I would strongly discourage you to use Photo StatLr! Photo StatLr provides a way for exporting/publishing (typically processed) photos from Lr to the /photo share, so that you can view your processed photo via Photo Station/DSPhoto.

If your originals are stored where your processed photos should go, you will finally loose your originals in case your accidently use the normal upload publish mode. Even if you don't use the "Upload" mode, but just the "CheckExisting" mode, you will establish a second path for metadata exchange besides the already existing path: most of the metadata modifications done in PS will be written back to the picture file, so Lr will typically recognize this and offer a "read metadata from file" logo in the upper right corner of the photo in grid view. On the other hand, if you change metadata in Lr, depending on your catalog settings, those changes will be written back to the file and the diskstation will trigger an re-indexing (and repeated thumb nail generation) for those photos. If you bring Photo StatLr into the game, this is getting even more confusing...

You really need to decide whether you want to use /photo as store for your originals (and view your originals in Photo Station), in which case you should keep your hands away from Photo StatLr or if you want to use the Photo Station as a target for your processed photos, in which case you should store your originals anywhere else on the diskstation. In the latter case Photo StatLr will really be helpful for uploading of the photos and thumbs and downloading/synch-ing feedback from PS to Lr.

Hi Martin
many thanks for your answer. Reading again your answer and another post :"... Synology's PhotoStation to see your Lightroom metadata, make sure you have Lightroom set to write metadata changes out to files - it's in Catalog Settings, "Automatically write metadata changes into XMP." This is presuming the master files live in Synology's /photos folder, and are shared across your network to Lightroom."
I think I missed a parameter in LR because just a part of tags are updated. I will modify and test again, and as you said "strongly discourage " myself to use PhotoStatLR... unfortunatly !

Hello there,

I'm discorvering this excellent plugin for Lr, thank you for it. I've spent some hours to try it, and now I would transfer all my local photos (38k) to my NAS in the folder photo.

With a first try of 10 photos, it's all good. But with the whole collection I have an issue. I observed that the exported photos to the NAS are also copied in a temp folder on my C: disk ( my collection is saved on a D: drive on my Lr PC). I didn't find an option or menu to correct it, and as I have not enough space on my C: drive, the plugin stopped with an error.

Thank you for your help.

The issue and some workarounds are described in a Wiki post. It's caused by Lightroom copying all original or processed photos to be published to the system temp directory which is always on the system drive. So, you can' change that behaviour via Plug-in settings.

I would suggest to split your collection in smaller Published Smart Collections (e.g. per year) to force a smoother ramp-up. You will find smaller collection more suitable for other features such as downloading metadata or comments, anyway.

Hi Flingo,

1) I have an issue since upgrading Photostation to version 6.8. When I try to Publish, it gives me this error immediately after finishing Preparing to Export:

"Processed 1 of 2350 pics in 4.7 seconds. (4.2 secs/pic). 1 failed to upload."

When checking the logs in Debug mode, it all looks good until this point:

8:43:31 PM, DEBUG: Got Body:
{"success":false,"err_msg":"session_lost","duplicate_folder":false}
8:43:31 PM, ERROR: PSUploadAPI.createFolder('/', '2017-07Jul-Baseball Game') failed: session_lost!
8:43:31 PM, ERROR: Create dir - parent: / newDir: 2017-07Jul-Baseball Game failed!
8:43:31 PM, INFO : --------------------------------------------------------------------
8:43:31 PM, TRACE: closeSession() starting
8:43:31 PM, DEBUG: PSExiftoolAPI.close: terminating exiftool.

I also noticed earlier in the log, it shows this:

8:43:26 PM, INFO : "psVersion":"67"

But I'm running Photostation 6.8, so maybe that's the reason? I couldn't find a 6.8 option in the Photo StatLR options.

2) Even before this problem, I've noticed a lot of photos will randomly get added to the "Modified Photos to Re-Publish" section, even though nothing has been done to those photos to cause this. This will happen even in since the last time I opened Lightroom, and it's usually completely random photos, maybe a dozen or so at a time. Any idea why this is happening?

Thank you again for this great plugin!

Hi Hoovdan,
I did the updated to DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 6 and Photo Station 6.8.0-3456 which came with a bunch of other updates (PHP, Apache,...) just yesterday. Today, I uploaded some hundred photos which included creating albums in Photo Station, also. All this worked fine. It's true, PS Version 6.8 is not yet in the Photo StatLr listbox, but that shouldn't matter, there is currently no PS6.8 specific code in the plugin.
Could you please check:
  • which version of DSM you are using
  • Can you create Albums in Photo Station root album via the Synology Photo Station Uploader tool
The other issue is caused by Lightroom itself, you can find a description of the issue in this PhotoShop Family thread
John R. Ellis was able to nail down this issue with some help from my side and describes a step-by-step instruction to work around this issue

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the reply! I'm running DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 6 and PhotoStation 6.8.0-3456.

I just created an album using Synology Photo Station Uploader tool. I created a folder on my Desktop with a single photo (Source Folder) and created a folder on the Synology through the Browse option on the dialogue box under the /photo root on the Synology. I ran it with options 1, 2, and 4 checked. It successfully completed and uploaded the test folder and photo to my Synology /photo root. I checked in PhotoStation and sure enough it's there with all my other albums. So that definitely works.

But then going back to Lightroom and trying to Publish the collection gives me the same error as before.

Also, thanks for the tip on the constantly-modified photos, I'll have to read up on that.

Are you using the latest version of the Synology Photo Station Uploader? I found the following statement in its release notes
Fixed an issue where an error message of disconnection might display when a user creates a new folder during photo uploads.
If so, I will have to adapt whatever they changed in their last release.

Re: Lightroom Export Plugin: PhotoStation Upload

Unread post by hoovdan » Tue Oct 10, 2017 3:40 am

I was on an old version of Photo Station Uploader (version ending in 056, from the installer .exe name). Now I downloaded the new version ending in 087 and made a new upload profile for my server. Still no luck in Lightroom, same error and same in log file.

Manually uploading photos via the Photo Station Uploader is still working, though.

Strange, right?

Hi,

did you have time to check out the new Moments app? Is still in beta, but it looks like it's meant to replace Photostation in the future.
I would prefer if they include the AI features on PhotoStation rather than doing a new app.

Anyway, is it similar enough that your plugin would work with it? I hope it is and it can be done with few tweaks.
If not I hope they keep PhotoStation for long time. I can't live without your plugin, hehe!

Let us know what you think.

Cheers!
