Thumbnails generation for iPad

Unread post by ieperlingetje » Tue Mar 01, 2011 8:40 pm

My DiskStation is been busy all evening converting images to be available on the iPad. I really don't need this. How can I disable this function?

I appreciate that indexing can be disabled ..... but why can't this feature be enabled by exception rather than by default?

I don't have an ipad so it makes no sense to have a process run that generates a 'thumbnail' (how is 1280x1280 a thumbnail!!!) and store this when there is no chance of it being used. :cry:

convert is still running after 36 hours! I also don't own an iPad and have no interest in having these (elephant) thumbnails generated.

The above is a very crude way of stopping this process running and is likely to cripple some of the other services, so surely there must be a more elegant way of disabling it?

Another question, will this re-indexing process be run periodically and will it take as long to complete the next time? If it won't then leaving it to complete would seem sensible, but if this is going to happen once a week, then it is going to have to die.

An option to disable just the iPad thumbnails would be really helpful at this point (hint hint!).

Cheers R.

Okay, I think I have found the offending config file - it's /usr/syno/etc.defaults/thumb.conf - and it clearly has a couple of lines appended to it to deal with the larger thumbnails - I have removed the following lines from mine.

Code: Select all

[thumb 1280]
size=1280
quality=90
filename=SYNOPHOTO:THUMB_XL.jpg
Two questions - which folder is used for config files, as there is an older version of thumb.conf in /usr/syno/etc.defaults? And is that likely to be it, so if I restart the synothumbd daemon now, should we be back to normal?

Thanks R.

I agree that creating thumbnails for iPad should be disabled by default. The option should be exposed in the DSM software, e.g. in the window where Photo Station is turned on and off.
In general it would make sense to allow selection which thumbnails should be generated, in the context of the running applications that use them. Otherwise the scarce hardware resources on the Disk Station are being wasted on creating thousands of images, which takes both time and hard disk space.

I'll second this. I don't have an iPad, never will get an iPad and therefore don't need my DS wasting time generating tens of thousands of thumbnails for a device that the DS will never see.

Syno -- how do we "officially" disable this process and for those that have already suffered through the convert process, get rid of the useless thumbnails it created?

...at least DSM 3.1 Release Notes should contain info how time consuming is this process so user can plan upgrade in right time.
I have 15G of pictures and CONVERT process is running now for 41 hrs. :cry:

Hmmm,
one of my reasons to buy a NAS was to store the family pictures
in one place, (with a remote back-up copy).

With cheap point&shoot digital cameras and camera equipped mobile phones
there is the opportunity to record much more of life,
especially with a young child in the household.

We probably have 10,000 pictures on the 207+.

How much space on the 2Tb hard drives will all these unnecessary (maxi-)thumbnails take?

This was clearly a bad move from Synology.
I have an iPad, but I'd really like this to be optional anyway and/or a scheduled service...
I guess the percentage of iPad owners aint that high, so Synology shouldn't let everyone suffer from this...

What I've done is create another share. Move all pictures from the system share 'photo' to the new share.
Hide the 'photo' share so no one at home is tempted to use it (although OSX keeps showing it :roll: , windows at least doesn't).
Now the 'convert' process stops.

But I'm not using any of the photo station facilities. If you do, you might need to resort to another solution.

If you believe Resource Monitor
my 207+ has been converting a picture roughly every 2 minutes since I
updated to DSM3.1.

I don't fancy mucking around in the stuff indicated in the link.

Switching off Photo Station and Audio station has had no effect,

still convert is hogging the cpu

and any torrents are being downloaded in the gaps between photo conversion,
very slowly.

I agree. +1
