What should I get?

Postby worb68 » Fri May 10, 2013 9:21 pm

Hi, How hard is it to decide between the entry level Qnap and Synology 2 Bay drives. To start I'm looking to be able to:

Raid 1 the drives for data protection and if one drive fails easily be able to rebuild the array

I have a folder with all key data in. Back it up to the drive and then just make the changes be backed up to the NAS. Is this possible, if so how?

Purchase a SONOS and stream music from the NAS to the SONOS music device

Stream over WIFI movies to my Xbox to play on my TV

Download Torrent files - can you tell it to stop the connection as soon as the file finishes?

So which one is better and should I go for? Which one is easiest to setup? Also is there a list of hard drives easily available that are supported in each drive available so I dont have any issues here.

Many Thanks for your assistance.

Hi

Both brands of NAS can handle what your demands of a NAS.

The difference is in the OS, where Synology uses DSM http://www.synology.com/dsm/index.php?lang=enu

Qnap has there own OS http://www.qnap.com/single_page.php?sn=105&lang=en

Both run their version based on Linux.

About compatability check this for synology

About which one is the easiest to setup, and so on is kind of a religion question, some truly belive in Qnap others in Synology.
For my part I do like that the DSM (synology OS) is acting just like a Linux windows based OS, in my experience that makes it easy to setup and handle.
