Need help recover files from basic hdd

Postby jimmieh85 » Thu Feb 07, 2013 8:23 pm

Hi
My 7 days old hard drive in my synology nas crashed yesterday. The disk was installed as a basic disc without protection. After the hdd crash I restarted my synology nas and in the storage manager it showed the disk as “not initialized”. I took out the disk and connected it to my windows computer to try recovering the files. I used “Ext2 volume manager” to see the hdd and it shows me 3 partitions on the hdd: EXT3, SWAP and RAW. On the EXT3 there are some files but not the one I had saved on the hard drive.

How do I find the files that I had saved on the hdd?
And how do I know that my hard drive really is broken? The synology storage manager is not able to finish S.M.A.R.T Test.

Hi

Your data is in a folder in the 3 partition.

If you after the backup, put you disk into a PC and run the manufacture hard disk tool and test the disk to see if it reports faults. If it does then you can get it replaced.

Thank you for the reply.

With the third partition I guess you mean the RAW partition. I also suspected that my data was in this partition because it is almost 3Tbyte big. But the problem is that I don’t know how I am going to access the data. If I mount the RAW volume with “Ext2 volume manager” it shows up in windows file explorer as a disk but when I try to open the disk it says that there is not any file system on the partition and that I need to format the drive before I can use it.

How do I read a RAW file system in windows? What program do I need?
I did not think that RAW was a file system and that it contained any data.
Why does my synology nas say that the disk is not initialized when it was working perfect for a week? Shouldn’t it give me any option to try to repair the disk?

Hi

I haven't seen any solutions for windows, but allot have succeeded with a Linus disto, you can find one that you can boot from a CD.

check this post this guy mount the partition as a drive.

Hi
I installed ubuntu on a usb stick and connected my crashed harddrive but I was only abel to see the EXT3 partition where the synology files are. I was not able to see the RAW partition were all my files are saved.

For windows I found ReclaiMe that manage to scan the partition and find all my files but it costs money to recover the files. And I don’t feel like buying that program.

I even tried to connect the crashed drive to the synology usb port but it was also only able to see the EXT3 partition.
Anyone that know any other way to recover the files?

Western digitals test of the hdd showed that the smart test past but the extensive test said that there were some damaged sectors on the hdd.

Tried using this product, but if it is a Head Crash, there is little help this program can do. If it important data, send the disk to a Specialist in DATA recovery, they are expensive.

UFS Explorer or Raise Data Recovery EXT2/3/4 which can read Synology Hard Drive through USB Enclosure.

My NAS form synology deleted the file index from all file in my PHOTO folder and appeared as empty. With this program I recovered all.

Use photorec

It does recovery by the physical disk layer. Works after formats and does not care about the filesystem. The bummer is that some files can not be recovered and you will loose all filenames and folders.
Insert something people may care about here

Return to “Backup/Restore for DiskStation to DiskStation/USB/eSATA/Off-site backups”
