Not sure I understand the use case. What problem are you trying to solve?

I'm using "Hyper Backup>local data copy" to synchronize the diskstation contents to a usb disk. Every backup updates only the modified contents but performs in one-direction only.

I was wrong in the old post, it does not work on the same nas! I should have removed the old post. It only works between two nas.
On the same nas you should use other tools like hyper backup.

Ahh I see. Hyperbackup!
But it won't sync immediately once there is changes?

Ok. thanks, at least I found solution.

Apparently the Hyperbackup create backups using it own file compression. I couldn't achieve my need.

What I want:
- I have 15years+ worth of my photographs both for work and personal and they all saved under one folder name "photo-original"
- I want to create one way sync to a folder name "photo"
- Because if I only have 1 photo folder under "photo" , I'm afraid if the DSM did something to my original photo
- So whenever I have new photo I will upload to the "photo-original" and it also copy to the "photo" folder

Your strategy is not so common. Not sure what you want to do.

If you need backup, it should be on another system, preferably at another place. In case your DS is stolen or breaks down seriously, you may loose all data on that machine.

Immediate copies to another system can be made by:
cloud station, cloud sync
sharesync

delayed (scheduled) copies to another system
hyper backup (you can set the option not to compress and no versioning in option "local data copy" single file

Delayed copies on your current system:
- hyper backup ( scheduled).

All sync based systems are sensitive to the following issues:
- deletion of the file (my delete the copy too, unless you tell it to be one directional)
- Ransomeware (once the original is encrypted, the sync will be encrypted too.
- Versioning is maintained by cloud station and hyper backup, you can always return to a previous version in case you ruin the file.

Some people would just setup a cloud sync connection to e.g. hubic cloud to make sure all data is secured immediately after saving.

Thanks eaz for the reply.

What I want to do:
- Is to leave my original photo files as it is
- Because when I copied my photos to my NAS under the folder "photo" (I haven't even install Moments / Photo Station), it said that my files are being Converted (conversion in progress), which I made quick research after that and people also are not really sure what is the DSM converting to? I believe I found some answer that it created thumbnails and is not altering any original files.
- I just want to have peace of mind and to have my original photo files backed up in another folder

What I want to achieve:
- my main photo folder is under shared folder name "photo-original" . So whenever I took new photo using my mobile / camera, I will upload there
- Then I will want the Synology to one way sync to a shared folder "photo"
- I can access my photos using Moments or Photo Station without worry that my original files photo will be converted / altered in any way.
- In the future if I need my photo files to another system I can just take the "photo-original" over.

Sorry for my bad English.

Hi,
did you find a solution to it?
I want to copy my musicfolder to another folder, so i can tag the files without destroying the original
I just did a regular copy of the whole folder, but got a lot of error messages: action not supported and it didnt copy a lot of my files.
thats why i would really like to have a sync tool exactly like you are looking for.

I have a feeling Resilio Sync might be able to do what you need...

EDIT: Sorry, I just checked and, while Resilio Sync does do a one-way sync (called 'read only'), it is only between devices rather than between folders within the same device. That said, it might be possible to get around it by doing a one-way sync from your 'original folder A' on your NAS to a folder on a separate device (like your computer or mobile or the like), and then a one way sync from that device back to 'folder B' on your NAS.

Not yet :(

But for Music, I tried before and is almost no different between my original folder and "music" folder. They only put thumbs.db

I'm not sure if I even understand the reasons why people want to sync two folders on the same NAS, but since I've seen this topic pop up multiple times, I tried to find a (relatively) simple solution to this problem and I found one that doesn't need too much tweaking and works pretty well. :)

So you want to sync two local folders but the regular apps don't allow the source and destination to be on the same machine. Then "think outside of the box" and make the source APPEAR to be a different machine from the destination even though it is the same!

I solved this by installing WebDAV Server on my NAS (well, actually it was already installed, but those of you who haven't should do so).

Then I used Cloud Sync (you should also install that if you haven't already) to sync one folder with another one on "localhost". For those of you not familiar with networking thingies, "localhost" is a fixed DNS name that will always resolve to the machine itself.

So here's the step-by-step things you need to do to sync two folders on the same machine. For this example I named my shared folders "test1" and "test2"...
  • Install WebDAV Server
  • Install Cloud Sync
  • Start Cloud Sync and create a new task using the [+] icon
  • Select WebDAV as your "Cloud Provider"
  • Use "locahost" as the Server address and enter your login credentials. Remember to add the port-number you used for WebDAV after the Server address, for example "localhost:5005"
  • Give this task some name (I simply used "Localhost") and select one folder for the "Local path" and the other for "Remote path". In my screenshot you'll see "test1" and "test2", which are both shares on my NAS, but you could also select folders within shares if you wish.
  • Choose a sync direction. "Bidirectional" will make sure both folders are always the same, no matter in which folder you change things. "Download remote changes only" will cause changes in the "Remote path" to be synced to the "Local path" but not the other way around. "Upload local changes only" will cause changes in the "Local path" to be send to the "Remote path" but not the other way around.
That's all there is to it!

The nice bonus feature of using Cloud Sync like this is that you can also set a schedule for syncing. If you don't, any changes will be synced immediately, but if you do you can set the timeframe when syncing should occur, for example only during the night when you are not using your NAS.

Hope this is working the way you want it to. ;-)
