Best Practice for Backup antiransomware with n.2 DS and USB

Unread post by Valerio1975 » Tue Jun 12, 2018 9:35 am

Good morning, I have n.2 4 bay DS (model 412+ and 414) , both with n.1 USB 3.0 WD Passport 4 TB
I need to improve the backup system of my Vmware VM (only Windows Server OS for DC, File server, ecc) as safe as possibile, against the ransomware ( not NASA solution  ).
All my VMware VM are installed on a SAN, for about 1.5/2.0 TB of data, that I backup by Veeam B&R 9.5 Update3 daily on the first NAS (412+), that I use only for VM backup.
I need to build the best solution against ramsomware for backup offsite and secondary backup (we can't use Cloud backup for bad Internet connection).
Now Veeam and NAS 412+ are already in a separated VLAN to Client PC and Server.
For all your info or helps, Thanks a lot!!
Bye.

Well If you have active backups and replicas done via veeam what the problem then regarding ransomware? How often do you take snaps and backup of each vm?

What file system to you have on that 412+?

Thanks for your fast answer.
The DS412+ have Btrfs FS and SHR Raid.
Actually I backup incremental all my VM once a day, with Full during weekend.
Actually I don't use Snapshot or Replica.
Waiting your info to improve that situation and protect as well my data.
Thanks.

Ok so why aren't you using replica function on Veeam? Would an option to use snapshot manager on Syno side be an option?

I look now the Veeam Replica function, but it's only for destination Vmware host or Cloud, not to Share or NAS.
About Snapshot manager, i can use for another copy of my backup (now I try this function), but it is in the same position of the backup, and if a ransomware crypt my NAS, I lost everything.
I want to save my backup in different destination with at least one copy offline, for preserve my main data as well as possible.
Any further suggest? Thanks.

NAKIVO Backup and replication in a combination with NAKIVO Backup and Replication Transporter. Both are in the Package center.

Also you can use snapshot manager to make snaps and then use rsync to push them off the NAS to a separate location.
