Help, 1515+ NAS and Plex stuttering issues

Unread post by nizmoz » Sun Apr 16, 2017 3:48 pm

Hello everyone. It seems my 1515+ has just recently started to do this now. I would get a lot of stuttering issues in my PLEX when it is playing a movie. Sometimes it will just give up and stop. I use MKV to convert the Blu-Ray to the NAS for playback. But maybe the NAS can't handle it.

Thought it was my new TV with plex installed but I went back to the old way using Chrome cast and my phone and it did it there as well. Stuttering especially with lots of action scenes. It sometimes gives up and won't continue. My nas has 16gb of memory too. Any help would be appreciated. I spent a lot of money to make this my plex media server and I'm sad this has started.

So it seems when I run plex, I am using 99% cpu on my NAS, Memory is 19%, and network is barely moving. 1.2mb sec up and 10kb down.
Plex Transcoder is using 94.7 cpu, and memory 287.2mb.
I have 1GB ethernet in my house, and the WIFI is run with my EERO Mesh system, and has extremly high speed between devices.

I was using MKV, and I just tried HandBrake, and I get a no valid source or titles found when it looks at the disc. What am I doing wrong then?

The problem here is simple. You content is not being handled on the Plex client side but on your Plex server side (NAS) and your cpu just can't keep up and its killing your NAS.

You need to have the right combination of audio/video stream that your Plex clients can use so there will be no transcoding on the server side. Direct Play or Direct stream options will not force your CPU and your experience will be just fine.

My 412+ NAS has no problem with those scenarios and its using less then 1% cpu power when pushing the content to my devices (in original a/v format). It works just fine via TV plex app or ios.

So again, try and optimize the format to not force your server side to transcode.

Well something has changed on your end (NAS side if you say that your new TV and plex app there is not the problem). You said that just recently you started to get these problems, so what did change? Keep in mind also that for example LG smart tv and Plex app for that brand (as far as I know) still forces transcode even if your TV can do the work on its own.

Are you making those files yourself or? Does this happen with all files (old one that did work without any problem)?

I am using MakeMKV to make those files. Pretty much all I do is use that, and copy those files over to the NAS plex folder.

Again not enough info on this.

What happens with older files that have worked before? Are they also causing problems? Have you read the Plex pointers on what and how to make your files? When your stream your problematic files what info is the file registering in Plex server activity tab? There you will see what is causing transcode in the 1st place (is it video or audio or both). That will give you info what needs to be changed when you create the files so as to avoid it in the future.

Also have you updated Plex server/client recently? If you did have you had problems before on the previous versions or did this start happening after you have update?

Also you didn't answer my question. What changed since this problems started? I have a number of questions here, the more you answer and more details you present there will be a greater chance to detect a problem

I went and played one of the original ones. CPU maxed out. Without watching the movie to see it happen, I won't know if the stuttering does it on it. I do not see an activity tab. A status tab, but doesn't show any errors. Nothing has changed that I am aware of other than MKV updates and Synology.

What do you mean you can't see the activity tab? Play the movie and then log onto plex server at the same time on your computer. There in the upper right hand corner you will see the status icon (heartbeat). When you click on it switch to 'Now playing' and you will see the movie tile. Click on the 'info' button to see whats causing transcode.

Also this plex server is not very old but there are newer version (if you have Plex pass) but don't think thats your problem here. What TV are we talking about here?

Try and run multiple files with different file size and format (if you have them) and see what happens in the activity tab. Something has changed if this was working before but bottom line is that your Plex clients are 1) forcing transcode or 2) are not capable to read the formats and are asking for transcode. In any case you need to get within the margins of Plex requirements for Direct Play, pure and simple.

Have you changed anything on your computer thats riping this BLs? Drivers, software, codecs etc? Also try and give a bit more info in your responds and not wait to be spoonfed in every single response. Read all the questions, suggestions so far, do multiple test and report back with as much info as you can.

I am playing this one video. It is under the STATUS / Now Playing, not where you mentioned.

It shows Transcoding H264 to H264 and Audio Transcoding DCA to AC3 when playing it to my iPhone just testing it here.

The TV is an LG 55UH7700.

Like I previously mentioned, Plex, NAS have been updated. My PC is also new and recently been upgraded completely. Same Blu-Ray drive however and Windows 10 is the same.

I am trying Handbrake now with this 2nd post here instructions: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/ ... vdblurays/

Well if you read again you will see that I DID mention it that
There in the upper right hand corner you will see the status icon (heartbeat). When you click on it switch to 'Now playing' and you will see the movie tile
Looks like you are not reading as well as you should.

Well at least you managed to write down some more info that gives some insight. 1st off make sure that Plex for LG is not transcoding by default (and by the looks of it Plex for LG still transcodes no matter what, so there is no help there). I would suggest your switch to XPlay app for LG (thats a Plex client compatible app that works with plex server and supports Direct Play).

Asaid this problem, your iOS app should and does support direct stream (coz direct play on an ios device will not work in those formats/containers you are using) but only as long as you push the content in original format (a/v) and have the file compatible in the 1st place. I use it on my ios devices all the time and have no problem at all in 1080p/DTS.

The problem here is that h264 is for some reason transcoding (and swapping containter from mkv to mp4 won't help) and that audio format is getting pushed to ac3. So on your iOS device try and set up streams so that they get on your phone in 'original' format and see if that will change regarding your nas cpu utilization. Also getting the right combination of audio and video formats will resolve this problem, but keep in mind that your TV will still, by default, transcode if you are using Plex LG original app (no matter how optimized your files are, and how big/small they are). Also I hope your TV is wired and not using wifi to talk to your NAS.

Like I said, Status/Now Playing as seen in the SS below. TV is using wifi as our house is not wired. It has no issues streaming any video from anything else in 4k for that matter.

All this shows is that its the same thing that I have said, and the fact that you can post screenshots. This has in no way got you closed to resolve your problem (or for anyone else).

Also wired communication as a suggestion not something that has to be in order for this to work. Considering that in your initial post you said that everything worked, I guess we are still waiting to see what has really changed thats making your Plex clients transcode (apart from the new TV that WILL transcode by default via Plex client for LG)

Thanks for the reddit thread, it helped me a lot! I was struggling with the audio transcoding for a few days.
