Time Machine Corruption on Mac OS High Sierra

Unread post by its » Sun Apr 15, 2018 9:38 am

Hey Guys

I've been seeing a lot of time machine corruption past month..

1) High Sierra 10.13.4 (17E199)
2) DSM 6.2-23511
3) Model DS918+
4) Router: Netgear R7000

Sitting less than a meter from the wifi on 5Ghz band.. Straight view of sight. No walls etc.. Tx Rate approx 800 Mbps shown on Mac

Bonjor is enabled with SMB for Time Machine

It's getting quite ridiculous now, I have to do a full backup over ethernet (8hrs). Bundle repair fails.

One of my main reason to use NAS is time machine and its not even reliable

Happen with both macs at home

Syno RT1900AC, yes using 5G on it as well. Mac that is backing up via ethernet is talking to a TM server via switch directly, no router in that case.

Ok.. can't change router.. :( so seems a router / wifi issue i guess if people don't have smb / tm issue

I have 10 Macs, all with latest MacOS 10.13.6, all backing up over Gig e-net, all to a Synology with current firmware. Starting a couple of months ago, every one of them has been finding they have to do a fresh backup because something was wrong with the old ones. It's getting pretty silly at this point. I've used this DiskStation for a couple of years and never seen this before, my guess is it's something Apple updated, as my sole Sierra laptop has had zero problems.

Running on similar infra. Have a cisco gb switch, cisco gb router and synology ds415+ with plenty of disk space available (10+TB). This is a SOHO setup in my house. The mac is running on HS 10.13.6 on a mid 2015 model that has a 2TB SSD, 16GB of RAM. I get the infamous (from what I've read) message: Snapshot sizing took longer than 4.00 seconds - timing out! when tailing the log. This goes on forever each time it is scheduled to backup. I also see thinning of the original backup occurring, but nothing significant about that. I do not for a minute think this is a router/switch issue. Synology issue MAYBE, but really think it is something deeper in the MAC TM, and am not sure where. Purely a guestimate based on my time in the workforce over the years in IT.

I'm seeing similar. iMac connected over ethernet is fine. MBP over wifi keeps failing. I can sometimes jumpstart it into action by disabling and re-enabling bonjour in the NAS. There's definitely an issue with time machine over wifi though. But I'm struggling to ping it down.

I've just upgraded to Mojave, fingers crossed, but it looks like that may resolve the issue. I'll confirm when the backup completes.
