Back up my PC to Synology NAS

Unread post by crosser » Fri Sep 14, 2018 4:47 pm

At the risk of sounding completely IT illiterate... this is our first NAS (918+). I want to back up my PC to the NAS. We are using Synology Drive, so we cannot use Cloudstation.

How in the world do I do something as SIMPLE as back up PC to the NAS?

"Active backup" package. If your machine is as WIn/Linux PC. Don’t worry if it says its for servers, works with desktop class OS as well. If its a Mac then use Time Machine and configure the NAS to be a TM destination.

If you are looking for a full backup solution, I recommend Windows backup (on your PC), or Macrium Reflect Free (on your PC), saving files/drive images to your NAS. These programs offer superior restore capability.

Where do I find this package please? I can't find it but maybe that's because I've got a DS214Play?
Even tracking down an official page with the minimum supported NAS has been a challenge. I was initially looking for "Active Backup for Office 365" but maybe it is the same thing.

Thanks

Hi Juergen6

There are several Active Backup applications. They're all available in the package center. One for "server" meaning any computer on your network (with a fixed IP address, it looks like), one for Office 365, another for (Google) G Suite.

Here's a YouTube video about it (the server): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eraaNlcMu-c

Thanks for the confirmation. I looked a bit harder and found that it isn't available for DS412Play, which is why I couldn't see it.

My answer regarding Active Backup tool was for the OP considering it was mentioned that the nas in question was 918+. That model does support it. Sorry for the mix up

In todays world, pc's are not backed up to the NAS. All the data is already on the NAS.
So quit storing locally with all its disadvantages and complexity.

Setup the data folders on the NAS and move everything there, retrieve it from the nas if you need it via folder mapping.

Then setup a cloudbackup (or external NAS) and sent your backups outside the house/business for the real backup.
:D
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

I agree that this is a valid approach that would work for many people. However, there are a number of scenarios for which it isn't ideal so I think the OP's search for a way to backup to the NAS is still quite valid.
