Time Machine what to use now since its not supported

Postby john510 » Mon Mar 20, 2017 3:39 pm

I've been using Time Machine in the past to take snapshots of the certain folders on the synology drive every couple hours and saving them to a attached USB drive for some time and now have upgraded the DSM finding out that Time Machine is no longer supported.

So How would you people recommend me performing this same task? which software ?

That has NOTHING to do with Time Machine.

You are confusing Time Machine (Apple Macbook backup) with "Time Backup," which is Synology's software for backing up a Synology machine to another Synology machine, or the cloud, or an attached USB drive.

TIme Backup has been replaced by Hyper Backup.

Ok So I should use Hyper backup to take the snapshots? Correct?

If you want to continue to do what you were doing with Synology's "Time Backup" software, you would now do it with Hyper Backup, yes.

Thank you for the reply would hyper back up be the choice for making makeups of the files on the synology unit in order to protect from Ransom ware? or is there a different procedure for that?

You could use hyper backup to make backups from one Synology to another, or to an offsite location, to protect from ransomeware, yes. You would want to make sure that the user name and password for your second synology, or your offsite backup, is not stored anywhere on the machine being backed up to the first Synology.

Hyper Backup has an option to set the "Frequency" of a daily backup to every hour, every two hours, every three hours, etc. It is on the scheduling menu for hyper backup.

I'm guessing it's because you set the "first run time" and the "last run time" to the same time.
If you set it to back up hourly, for example, it will back up once per hour starting at the "first run time" and ending at the "last run time".
If these are set to the same time, then of course it will back up only once.
