Slow speed with DS211j [merged thread]

Unread post by jfuhrman » Sun Dec 19, 2010 7:10 pm

I'm only getting 11MB/s when transferring files from the PC to the DS211j. All of the computers, the D-Link DGL-4300 router, and Netgear GS608 switch are gigabit. When I plug the cat5e cable into the DS211j and the Netgear switch, the switch shows the connection as 10/100 with an amber light instead of a 10/100/1000 connection with a green light. The PC has a green light. I've tried multiple ports and multiple cables, but the problem persists. I have two 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS drives, which are on the compatibility list. Suggestions?

I assume that the cable you are using is fully working, otherwise test first a different cable.
Do you have a way to force the link to be 1000Mbps from the switch side?

The 8-port gigabit switch is unmanaged, but the 3 available ports I was using for testing couldn't recognize the DiskStation as gigabit. I found a port that worked and now I can write data at 41MB/s (325Mbps) and read data at 50MB/s (400Mbps). Much better! I realize there are several reasons why I can't reach the theoretical 1,000Mbps. Thanks for your help.

DS 211J network performance-Gigabit/WLAN G- Win 7

Unread post by joeschny » Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:09 pm

Hi,
I just bought a new ds211j with a samsung HD204i unpatched in drive 2 slot. Slot 1 empty.
I am trying what to expect from my configuration i have set up.

Scenario1
Lenovo T60 (Win7) directly connected (cat5e) to the NAS (to check the max speed)
a. configured with 1 Gb network: Copy 100 MB file to mapped drive from laptop: 12-30 KB/s
b. configured with 100 Mb network: Copy 100 MB file to mapped drive from laptop: 4-5 MB/s

I have tried to change settings within router, the NAS and the laptop ... nothing helped and i am running out of ideas...

Is there a way how to diagnose the issue of Scenario 1a? Driver on computer is uptodate. yes, computer tells me it is connected with 1 Gb ;)

Scenario 2
Lenovo - Netgear WRTG 54 (DD-WRT) - NAS
with G: i get for file copies about 1.2 MB/s. I assume this is like an average value for a G network ?

Thx, J.

I have a Netgear GS605v3 switch that I've tried to use with a DS411+. If I connect my DS411+ directly to my Gigabit router or computer I get a Gigabit connection indication/performance with the DS411+. However, if I put the GS605v3 between the DS411+ and either the router or computer the indication/performance with the DS411+ drops to 100Megabit. I have a service request in to Synology -- but no answer yet.

performance of DS211j not very good

Unread post by theo_tusch » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:58 pm

Hi experts,

I have a Win7 PC connected to Gigabit Switch (Netgear GS608). The DS211j is directly connected to the gigabit switch.
my problem:
In my opinion my up- and download speeds are to slow. I am not an expert, so what can I do to get the maximum performance, I measured:
- Upload Speed (5GB file): 28 MB/s
- Upload Speed (mp3 files): 12-15 MB/s
- Download Speed (5GB file): 37 MB/s
- Download Speed (mp3 files): 16 MB/s

The Synology Homepage promises:
- Upload Speed (5GB file): 43 MB/s
- Download Speed (5GB file): 85 MB/s

What could be the problem?

Best regards,

New DS, very slow uploads and downloads

Unread post by crd » Wed Jan 05, 2011 6:51 pm

Hi Everyone,

I just got a new DS211j with Samsung HD103SJ 1TB hard drives. But, I'm having problems with how slow the set up is. I've tried the things I thought were obvious, like the network speed. However, I've come to a conclusion that the DS is really slow over its Ethernet connection. Has anyone else run into this?

The upload and download speeds are very slow. Using 3 different computers, 2 different routers (wired and wireless on both), 3 different cables and many different protocols the speeds are always extremely slow. A 1GB file takes almost 30 mins at best. It can average as slow as 20 KB/s, it never has averaged 200 KB/s.

Trying to upload a 40MB file it will start up slow(waking up the disks, I assume), spike to 600 to 1000 KB/s then slow to about 100 KB/s. At about 70% complete it slows to 20 KB/s or less at this point it is so slow you're not sure it is going to finish(In truth it often doesn't). It estimates 7-8 mins at first but takes much longer. This happens wired or wireless.

If a USB external hard drive is plugged into it, it can download files normally. Approx 90 GB/hr. Which sounds about right, I don't expect the Ethernet to be that fast, but it's too slow to use.

Thanks.

Do you have possibility to check from the network switch what's the physical speed of the
network link (like 100/1000 Mbps, half/full duplex) ? If not via a GUI, at least color of the
port LEDs should tell about speed.

From the Synology side, if you go to Control Panel -> Network, it should state what is the detected speed.

I'm wondering if there is a mismatch in the auto-negotiation of the network link.

It the router is a 100 full-duplex and that's what shows up on the DS network page. It's just a Linksys wrt54g, so I'm not expecting it to be lightening fast. But, it does show pretty reasonable speeds about 18Mbps over the internet. However, I'm an order of magnitude slower. I also tried a crossover cable, where it connects at 1000Mbps, but the transfer speeds are the same. I really thought it was the router at first, but I don't really see how it can be anything but the DS now.

Hi,

I checked in the Control->Network Panel, it shows 1000 full duplex. The PC shows 1.0 Gbit. So there should be no problem from that point of view.

I just got my DS211j this week and noticed the write speed is topping out at around 2 MB/s. The DS211j is plugged into my OpenWRT router, and it recognizes 100 full duplex. My computer is connected to the router by wifi. I am not using RAID in the DS211j. I'll post more information if I can find out anything.

Can't break 100mbit barrier with new gigabit switch and 211j

Unread post by counterpoint » Thu Jan 13, 2011 2:01 pm

I have a Synology Diskstation DS211j and two 2TB W20EARS drives in a raid 1 configuration and my router is a Cisco EPC2425. I have a mac mini running osx with boot camp where I also run XP. There are two other wireless computers on the network but I can't imagine they would slow things down just by being there.

I obviously wanted to break the 100mb barrier while transferring files so I bought some cat6 cables and a Belkin 5 port unmanaged gigabit switch. When connected my mac and the DS211j have a green light on 1000M.

The file transfers are the same speed at around 8 MB/s using filezilla FTPES and only 4.5 MB/s downloading with file station. I disconnected the router from the switch and I got the same transfer speeds. This is both with XP and OSX.

Network status on the 211j is 1000, Full Duplex, MTU 1500.

I have googled this for weeks trying to figure out what it could be but it just does not make sense why I am getting these speeds with my hardware setup.

I am assuming it is just something I have overlooked and I would really appreciate any advice that will help me get some proper speeds from my beloved DS211j :-)

I'm having the same experience with slow transfer speeds. Direct connection from NAS to PS yields about 30mb max which is far below the 100mb+ posted on the Synology website for the DS111

http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic ... 14&t=32292

I have contacted Technical support and I'm waiting to hear back what they think after sending them my kernel log.

This is a big disappointment if the numbers posted by Synology are highly exaggerated and if not I would like to know why the system is so slow.

Just a note,

I switched off SSL/TSL in the FTP settings for the disk station and I am hitting about 24MB/s now where I was only hitting 8MB/s with filezilla FTPES. I am going to see that as a victory for me :-) FTPES was the problem.
