Unable to play films straight off the NAS

Unread post by Octopuss » Mon Sep 24, 2018 9:24 am

I have some of my films stored on the NAS, and thought I could just click on the file and play it without copying it to my PC first.
Well, that mostly doesn't work! The playback is choppy, and most of the time keeps stopping for several seconds every few seconds.
I don't understand what the hell is going on.

I have DS716+II and a pair of WD Reds 4TB running in RAID1.

What I am describing is so bad it cannot be fragmentation problem.
It doesn't happen all the time, but often enough.

Does anyone have any idea?

How exactly are you playing them? What method (File Station, some media playback software…)? On what device are you trying to watch this content? What format and codec are in question?

Give a bit more info on the matter so we can troublshoot it better.

I just open the network location in Explorer and play the stuff in some sort of a media player. On a PC then.
It's typically x264 mkv files.

Well if they are both wired and your NAS is more then enough to handle this scenario my guess would be that you have a problem with your network or on your pc side
