DS413J write performance has crashed -- maybe most recent OS update?

Postby woodr141 » Wed Oct 25, 2017 12:36 am

Was consistently getting about 45 MB/psec write speeds to my DS413J but now that has dropped to 4 - 5 mb/ps and sometimes drops to zero for seconds at a time.

Volume utilization shows 100% during these times and CPU IO wait is in the 90 - 95 % range.

Have taken two OS/firmware updates in last few weeks and think this is associated with them (no other ideas). Can I roll back from current version of
DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 8 to earlier version? Or do any of you have any other thoughts as to why suddenly write speeds have crashed and burned?

Thanks.

Update: Have now found that read performance from the unit has also dropped significantly. Also checked the update page and it says the current firmware version cannot be downgraded. BTW, all disks are indicated to be in normal status, etc.

Still think this is a bug or flaw in the firmware, but now don't know where to go.

Had opened a ticket with Synology and sent them a .dat log at their request, but now they are requesting remote access to my DS413J and I let no-one have remote into it since that's where all our financial info is kept.

So, apparently screwed and currently with no ideas, but at these read/write 'speeds', the unit is practically unusable.

Is your Volume utilization still 100%? Could it be that the nas is indexing (or reindexing) your content.

Volume utilization is only at 100% during the very slow write operations. Indexing was one of the first things I turned off.

After looking at every performance indicator there is in depth, pretty sure the problem is the 80 - 95% CPU IO wait during IO operations. This sure didn't used to be like this and again -- all disks and the volume show normal status, no bad sectors, no nuthin. Sometimes during writes to unit, transfer rate drops to 0...yep sits at 0 bytes for 10 - 15 seconds and then 'bumps up' to maybe 4 - 5 mb/psec for a few seconds and then back to zero.
