Degraded Volume on 2.1 w/ 207+

Unread post by rvanwert » Tue Apr 21, 2009 2:40 pm

I have 2 x 1TB Samsung HD103UJs in a 207+ with RAID 1. This configuration worked very well in the 2.0 firmware (the last version). Hibernation/slow disk mode didn't work consistently in prior 2.0 versions but worked flawlessly in the most current 2.0 version. I suspected that in prior 2.0 versions Download Station was creating issues so I had stopped using it by the time I upgraded to the most current 2.0 version.

I upgraded to 2.1-839 probably about a month ago, which was working well but I just got a degraded volume and repaired this morning. I hadn't had degraded volume issues since earlier versions of 2.0. Everything seems to be working again but we'll see. S.M.A.R.T. shows each volume to be healthy.

But just remember that your hard disks are not part of the recommanded/tested ones listed by Synology, see here :http://www.synology.com/support/faq_sho ... u&q_id=130

@rvanwert

I would recommend using different disks... i use Western Digital (see below) WD & Seagate are around the best disk manufacturers in my opinion. i will advise you that a few users have reported compatibility issues with Seagate dives
I've been victim of those Samsung 500GB's when i ran a SMART TEST it sounds like somebody taking a hammer to the disk.

to enlighten you on the failure of Samsung drives, this is what happened to a HD502IJ 500GB

You do have the option to downgrade if you thought the grass was greener with DSM 2.0!
Downgrading is not officially supported, however the task can be completed quite easily.

I also lost my Disk2, after upgrading to 839.
I opened the NAS unplugged and plugged back SATA cables.
Seems fine since last week-end.
However I opened a ticket to get the cables replacement from Synology.

Would you mind post the screen shot of your SMART info(attribute) here ? Perhaps we can tell you why it is.

I am back to having a degraded volume. Now my drives (2 x 1TB Samsung HD103UJ) have been added to the Synology "tested" and blessed list of compatible drives with the 207+. This time, repairing the volume is not an option available... the option is grayed out. I have not yet upgraded to 844. I assume I need to first find a way to repair the degraded disk before attempting to upgrade the firmware. I am going to try disconnecting SATA cables. If anybody has some clues as to how to fix this and break this chain of needing to repair a disk and wondering if my data will be lost every month or two, I would be grateful. Its a little frustrating to say the least, especially since I don't use the DS 207+ all that much so it enjoys a mostly peaceful existence.

I have similar problem to yours.
I have two disks installed (Volume 1 --> ST3750330AS, Volume 2 -->ST31000340AS). Some days ago after a reboot in my system. the system boots up recognizing just the Volume 2. After many reboots, it "sees" also Volume 1 (part of my stored information) with an error message "System Partition Failed". Is there any way to have the rest of my stored data?

Volume:Volume 1
Type:Basic
Status:Abnormal
Capacity:686.43 GB
Available:505.32 GB
Minimal Disk Size:698.64 GB (750153713664 bytes)

The data i can read is just 10GB. Above you can see the system recognizes 180GB used in the hard disk, which is correct

Just reinstall the Firmware using Synology Assistant. This procedure is designed NOT to delete your data partition. Otherwise it would tell you in red letters and you can interrupt.

In my case, when I disconnected/reconnected the SATA cables... that did the trick in allowing me to repair the volume. I then upgraded to 2.1 v844 and have not had any issues (knock on wood) since. Glad that Synology added official support for my Samsung drives... seems great. Looking forward to 2.2, especially the DLNA capability.

Message to rvanwert:
I strongly encourage you to request a SATA cable replacement, because I again lost a couple of time my disk 2 with the old SATA cable.
FYI: I'm living in France after filled up the ticket, it took only 1 week to get the cables.
Since I got the new cable, I never get any new failure.
