Re: firmware 1636 on cs 406

Postby empereurbh » Wed Mar 20, 2013 6:02 pm

Hi alfredo
I don't came here for a long time but i'm glad to see that this thread is still alive ;-)
I use my cs 406 with your 3.1 firmware for some time. I need some synology package but i can't install them on my nas.
So i will get your latest experimental 3.2 firmware to get it work (probably with community source as you say before).
I know that i will loose LED, it's why i don't get it before... as i want vpn package and probably transmission instead of the built in download station i have no choice !

The problem is that i encoutenter the same problem of orcasmatron. I download the file with multiple browser, try to send it on dsm update manager with all browser too but always get "error message, file maybe corrupt"
My file seems to had the size you write. The only strange stuff is that all my browser can't tell me the total file size while downloading it.

Could you please tell me what i have to do ? Do i need to use another way to update my nas ?

I also have another question, my cs406 have 4 500GO hdd seagate, one of them is broken and my raid 5 is degraded but still working. Maybe this should restrict the update ? I can't change my broken hdd for now and i'm wondering to get more disk space. Does dsm 3.2 could give me the ability to install 4x2TO hdd with raid 5 ?

Thanks for your help guys and particulary Alfredo wich help us to give a new life to our x06 series.

Thanks for your reply Henryk42
I get four 500BG disk because i think it was the limit of my nas but i wonder this now as i read this Alfredo reply for a CS406e

Alfredo wrote:You can install the new firmware directly onto those drives.
Why not go with RAID5? It gives you 6TB space.

A raid 5 that give you 6TB spaces seems that you have install 8TB disk in the nas. The CS406e have more cpu and memory than my CS406 but the hardware is almost the same.
So i guess if i could install bigger disk with new DSM.

I will read your link to get more info

My mistake. You right.
I check some other forum and it seems that it could be possible to get bigger disk if they don't need to much power. Some special series of western digital work for owner of cs406 but message are outdated. Those series aren't available now but maybe green or red should work ? The other stuff is that everytime i saw post related for two 2To disks due to the price at this period and i guess so if it could be a problem with four disk and 8To total.
I still hope to get other answer on this post by user that could have done some test and i will retieve my experience here if i buy something on my side.

Cubestation CS-406 installation problems.

Postby neggard » Wed Apr 17, 2013 9:32 pm

I install a samsung 1TB disk in port 1 and download the latest Synology Assistant.
No problem to find the cubestation.

The Assistant format my disk and when it start to install the software it begin...
First I tried with the latest file on the download page
DSM 2.0-0731; Build Date : 2009/01/13

The error I got the was: You have to use version 1157 or later.

Then I found viewtopic.php?f=128&t=14130#p66541
I tried both CS406 DSM 2.3 1157 & CS406 DSM 3.2 1955 but got a new error.
The system say the file is corrupt.

Also my status LED on cubestation is Blinking Orange Light

Is there a diskproblem or could something else be my problem?

Hello Alfredo,

i'm running a CS406e since a few years with DSM 3.1 - 1635. Works great. :D
After a harddisk error i tried to setup the sytem new, with your DSM 3.2 - 1955.

I've download the file and checked size and MD5. Seems okay.

Code: Select all

C:\md5-x64>MD5-x64.exe DSM_CS406e_1955.pat
MD5 1.1.18  (c) 2002-09 by Matthias Withopf

DSM_CS406e_1955.pat  = 659cb6fd7552321481c09bedb8cca5ff
DSM_CS406e_1955.pat:Zone.Identifier  = fbccf14d504b7b2dbcb5a5bda75bd93b
2 files checked (198.215.706 bytes, 189.0 MByte, 216.2 MByte/s).

When i start the update, after while i get the error "File maybee corrupt."

Please have a look at the var\log\message i've attached.

Defender, I should really remove that file from my server because you're not the first one to tell me there's an error. Apparently I did something wrong when compiling it. Since it's an experimental firmware with some features not working (such as the LEDs), I don' think I'll be redoing it any time soon. Sorry.

Alfredo, any chanche that you'll compile DSM 4.x for the CS-406? Mine is still going strong with the DSM 3.1 you compiled for it, but if it's at all possible I would like to run DSM 4 on it.

I've since then bought 2 other Synology NAS boxes, bot I'm still using the 406 for backup purposes. And with the upgraded PSU I got from Synology a few years ago larger HD's is not a problem either.
