You should downgrade first to 3202 version of 410j then change unique in /etc.defaults/synoinfo.conf (I suggest change it to 411j, 412j also should work but with some problems), then update to DSM 6 step by step by automatic updates.

Thanks for the response dimmer.

I found this example on downgrading:

Since my unit is a little far away from my home, I will have to go and grab it and try the downgrade.
I cannot do this remotely, I think.

Will grab the unit and report back. :)

UPDATE1:

I haven’t retrieved my unit yet, so I thought I would see what i could do remotely.
I read online what to do and saw that the general way to downgrade was to edit the “/etc.defaults/VERSION” file with data from the .pat file that it should “think” it has installed.
So I went to grab the 3202 version as dimmer suggested and copied everything over from the VERSION file, inside the 3202.pat file.
It worked, the united showed it was version 3202 that was installed.
Next I tried to use system update and install the 3202 version on my unit that at this point, is running 5967 version of DSM.
I wouldn’t update as it was not a newer version and the automatic upgrade failed for the same reason.
So I thought, what If I softmod with an even older version and tried to upgrade from that to the 3202 release.
I downloaded the release 2668.pat file.
Extracted the file with 7-zip and grabbed the info from the VERSION file.
Replaced the VERSION file on my DS with release 5967 running.
Went to system update and saw it believed it was running 2668 release.
Did a manual update with the 3202.pat release and success!
The unit started flashing itself with the 3202 release! :D
Unfortunately this messes up the passwords on the system so that will need to be reset.
Currently I am awaiting a family member to help me with the reset button procedure so I can gain access with the Synology assistant.

Will update this post when I have further development. :)

UPDATE2:

SUCCESS! I have managed to install the very latest DSM on my DS410j box!
I used the advice from dimmer and downgraded my Synology to an older version and described above.

Then I got a family member to do a single beep reset, so the network and admin password is reset on the device, to regain control.
At this point, the device have been downgraded with files from the 3202 release and it thinks it’s a DS411j.
Now the fun part started, upgrading using the auto update function.
I have taken screenshots throughout the process, showing the current release installed and the release ready.
I hope it’s okay, that I link the pictures in this comment, as posing the pictures will take up a lot of space. But if I get an OK to add the pictures here, instead of linking them, I will update this comment with the pictures.

Here is the link to the album, if you just want to see pictures.

After the password reset, I started updating and it was going from release DSM 4.2-3202 to DSM 4.3-3827.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a screenshot from this update, but I did take one from DSM 4.3-3827 to DSM 5.0-4528.
https://imgur.com/xO4WJZP
It updated without problems and the next update should take it from DSM 5.0-4528 to DSM 6.0-8754.
https://imgur.com/n4eHAB3
But it failed, telling me I needed to install DSM 5.2-5565 first.
https://imgur.com/0YRz912
So I downloaded the DSM 5.2-5565 release file and did a manual update.
https://imgur.com/paX0rpn
It worked, so I continued with auto updating from release DSM 5.2-5565 to DSM 6.0-8754. This is where I really starred at the screen almost without blinking. ;)
https://imgur.com/4Wetsj5
Success. I was now on the version 6 of DSM!
So, I continued updating the DSM to the latest version. This is from DSM 6.0.3-8754 to DSM 6.1.3-15152.
https://imgur.com/bwfbhGo
And the final update from DSM 6.1.3-15152 to DSM 6.1.3-15152 Update 5.
https://imgur.com/kI9fksp
Now I have my DS410j, running the current latest DSM at the time of this post, believing it’s a DS411j.
https://imgur.com/OkpAgyN
The hardware looks completely identical on the two boxes and looking at the Marvell specifications, the chip is designed to operate at 1 to 1,2 GHz. So, I am not worried.

At this point, I was curious and wanted to experiment a little before I started loading it with data.
So I went for a complete system reset to see if the DSM 6.1.3 indeed was written on the devices onboard flash.
This was also a successful test.

And final screenshot.

I am very pleased with my DS410j running the latest version of DSM and are enjoying the Hyper Backup Vault. I have noticed that I cannot add the device to quick connect for some reason, but don’t pay too much attention to it, as I am running a site 2 site VPN on two pfSense systems.

Thanks for the help dimmer! :)

Hello and many thanks HellG for detailed info on updating 710+ to newer DSM. I am little stuck so If someone could help it would be great.
I have 710+ too and I don't know what to do with following:

Connect the module to your computer and mount the first partition. Now its a good time to backup the data from both partitions of the flash module. Open /boot/grub/grub.conf with an editor and place a "#" in front of "cksum /grub_cksum.syno" to comment it out.

I connected USB module as mentioned, device is recognized by my computer but unfortunatelly I don't know how to mount partition from flash drive. Do I need some kind of app to do that?

Hello and thanks for all the info here.

Just posting my experience thus far for anyone interested. I have a DS409, so I followed the recipe here to force an upgrade:

First thing was to download Putty, log in to the DS409 with a SSH connection with username 'root' (not admin) and the correct password.
After logging in navigate to the /etc.defaults folder. This is easily done by typing:

cd .. (there is a space between cd and ..)
cd etc.defaults

and then get ready to edit the file synoinfo.conf - This can be done using the built in editor vi. Simply type:

vi synoinfo.conf

then change the first line of the file from unique="synology_88f6281_409" to unique="synology_88f6281_411j"

This was accomplished by positioning the cursor on the number 0 (using arrow keys). Press the x key twice to delete the “09”.
Press the i key, and enter “11j”.

Now, to save the file, make sure to be in command mode (Press escape if in doubt.) and type:

:wq

So far so good. Now it is important to NOT reboot the DS.

This is the first point which was a bit unclear to me, as most guides says the DS409 will now think it is a DS411j and it will be ready for an update. When I went into control panel and DSM update, it would do a quick scan and tell me the system was up to date with the latest update available. So...using the automatic update function did not work for me.

What I did was to download DSM_DS411j_3827.pat from here: https://archive.synology.com/download/D ... /4.3/3827/

Then I simply clicked on the "Manual update" button and navigated to the pat file I had downloaded. I cliked "yes" or whatever it was to accept to process and after a few minutes the system came back up and update was a success.

Going into the control panel and DSM update page again, I was not presented with the option to update automatically to DSM 5.0-4528. I accepted it, and the system again did a successful update.

Now it is presenting me the option to update further, to DSM 6.0-8754 but I am not sure I want to continue, as my current 5.0-4528 gives me the functions I wanted.

So there you have it, only part that I was a bit nervous about was the first upgrade, from 4.2-xxx to 4.3 as this had to be done as a manual update downloading and selecting the correct file.

Hello,

It has come to our attention that many who followed the instructions in this thread have been experiencing technical issues after updating to the non-official DSM versions with older Synology models. We strongly advise against using modified DSM versions as it will disable Synology Quickconnect and DDNS services on the units after the update.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Hi Frands, thanks for sharing the success, congratulations!

But i am curious what file system is running in your DS410j, according to its online spec.:
https://global.download.synology.com/do ... et_enu.pdf

It should be ext3, right?
on the other side, referring its product download site:
https://www.synology.com/en-global/supp ... #utilities

the max. OS would be DSM 5.2, right? would you have any incompatibility issue if yo upgrade to DSM 6? or any speed lagging delay?

Thanks for sharing your experience

Hi,

can anyone suggest how to proceed with a clean install in case the DS409+ has been already patched to DS411j? I took off all my disks and put it to my new Synology, but still want to use my old one. Shall I install the DSM for 409+ or for 411j?

thanks
