Need fix for case-insensitivity problem

Postby Albert » Thu Dec 18, 2008 2:04 pm

Hello,

I just bought 2 DS 107+, and discovered I have a big problem with the Synology ext3 filesystem being case-insensitive. The problem is also described and discussed here: http://www.synology.com/enu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10840&start=15.

I'm not sure if Synology patched the ext3 filesystem or did some other crazy hack to make ext3 case-insensitive, but anyway, this is a serious bug causing my backups to be corrupted.

Any news on when we can expect a fix?

Thanks

This is not a bug but a feature.

However somewehre on the feature request part of this forum, Synology replied that they will implement case-sensitive nameing in an upcoming FW

Feature? What for? Samba already takes care of doing the right thing for Windows users. For Windows, it makes no difference either way. For Unix users it is a quite serious bug, causing corrupted backups!

I'm sorry, I can not agree with that. There is no advantage brought by this behavior. It is a serious bug. It makes impossible to use the NAS for diskless linux systems.

There is a new Synology Disk Station Manager 2.1-0803 Beta Program Opened

See here: http://www.synology.com/enu/support/bet ... 3_2009.php
and here: viewtopic.php?f=125&t=12218

From the announcement:
> 12. Case-Sensitive File System: Case-sensitive file system is automatically supported
> after firmware upgrade to provide better Linux and Mac compatibility.

But that upgrade is only for the newer 7,8,9 models!

No more updates and fixes for the x06 series!
Read here: viewtopic.php?f=125&t=12237

I'm really disapointed about that. I have a 106e which I can't use reliably without a fixed ext3 filesystem.
And I won't do a hardware upgrade to get a software upgrade!
