Problem with USB drives

Unread post by smares » Thu Jan 19, 2017 9:57 am

I am having problems lately with USB drives and my DS214. Disks that are connected via USB 3.0, even though they have their own power supply, are either not recognized, or they are but then suddenly disappear from the External Devices option later. Sometimes rebooting helps, sometimes not. When I shut down the NAS (via Shut Down menu, not just a power off via button), I get an error that the disks were not unmounted and that I should eject them next time. The discs were formatted with the NAS and have an ext4 filesystem.

OK, now it's totally broken. No matter what device I plug into the rear USB ports (both), none works. The devices light up or in case of HDDs I can hear the disks spinning up, but nothing happens afterwards. I logged in per SSH to my NAS and a tail -f on /var/log/ gives the following output if I plug in a device to the front USB, port (in this case an empty cardreader):

Code: Select all

But absolutely nothing happens when I connect devices to the rear USB ports.

I don't get it. fdisk -l doesn't list my external disk. Under Settings, Control Panel, External Devices lists no disk. Control Panel, Info Center however lists the WD drive under External Devices.

I have the same issue with my DS214 (latest DSM update): No device connected to the USB 3 connectors on the back is recognised. The same devices are immediately recognised on the USB 2 connector on the front. Similar issues seem to exist for almost a year https://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopi ... k&start=15.
I have submitted a ticket to the support.

I RMAed my NAS and am getting a DS716+ II, but I saw that some DS713+ and DS716+ II users also have problems. Wondering what the issue is.

Does anyone know what the miphy_ssc_off=1 parameter does when loading the phy-st-usb3 kernel driver? Does it have something to do with Spread Spectrum Clocking?

Hi, I see this is a post from a long time ago, but I have a DS716+II and was having the same problems today, new Gtech GDRIVE mobile usb 2TB drive would not be recognized by the NAS in either the front or rear usb ports. I bought 2 of the Gtech drives, the first one I formated as exFat, that drive was not recognized in any usb port on my Synology NAS. The second gtech I formatted in ntfs just to see if it wold make a difference, and it did. That one successfully was mounted by the NAS and is copying right now using usb copy on the front port. So maybe it is a problem with certain file systems or maybe certain file systems on certain drives. But I can confirm now that the Gtech drive works as long as it was formatted using ntfs. Hope that helps. I am also using the latest software as of 4/13/2018 in the nas.

It might be an USB2.0 or DSM 6.2 issue.

I tested same USB device and disk on DSM 5.2 (DS1010+, USB2) and DSM 6.2 (DS1517+, USB3). While DSM 5.2 did its work OK, the DSM 6.2 reported partition as "<not supported>", recording the following into /var/log/messages

2018-09-01T17:26:10+02:00 elephant hotplugd: volume_external_part_mount.c:289 Fail to do [/bin/mount -t ntfs -o uid=1024,gid=100,big_writes /dev/sdr5 /volumeUSB1/usbshare1-5]
2018-09-01T17:26:11+02:00 elephant synoiscsiep: iscsi_start_all.cpp:118 Successfully started iSCSI service.
2018-09-01T17:26:11+02:00 elephant hotplugd: volume_external_mount.c:305 mount USB disk sdr5 partition 5 failed. [0x2000 bdb_get.c:40]

Unfortunately DSM 5.2 with USB3 port is not available to me.

Did somene already report issue to support team? If so, what were the results?

I managed to find a a DSM with USB2 ports only (DS214se). As there is the same error (unrecognized partitions), I can confirm, the issue lies within DSM 6.2 (at least, as I haven't been able to check on DSM 6.1 yet).

I filled a request to Synology Support in.

Maybe related - maybe not..
Was working with some USB disks today on my 214play. Suddenly, a new disk (and subsequent ones) wouldn't show in File Station. The External Unit indicator showed correctly a unit connected as USB3.0. Problem was (after some headaches solved in Controlpanel->External Units-> Settings. For some reason, no users (including Admin) has access to External drives. I set Admin to read/write and hey presto - the drive appeared in File Station.
