transcoding 4k hardware/software recommendations...

Postby spraycleaner » Mon Oct 16, 2017 8:14 pm

Hi there, I'm a bit confused about the models at this point (the new 2017/18 ones...)

For an example, a speedy one as the DS1517/1817+ 8GB versions even with the controller and lets say 2 x 250GIG M2 SSDs in - they run great, BUT is it true that they are less good at video 4k transcoding / even lack of the H265 !?

When I as an example compare a DS1817+ 8GB controller or not with a DS918+ it seems to me in the list of specs - that the DS918+ are better for this specific purpose? or is it just because the 1817 is more business orientated so synology hasn't testet functions like 4k transcoding eg. with plex!?

Look examples of the specs here:

DS918+
Hardware-transcodningsprogram
H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), MPEG-2 and VC-1; max. res: 4 K (4096 x 2160); Max. (FPS): 30

DS1817+

NO INFO!!!

later in the specs:

DS1817+
Total FPS (H.265)*
NONE

DS918+
1200 FPS @ 720p (1280x720)
1200 FPS @ 1080p (1920×1080)
600 FPS @ 3M (2048x1536)
400 FPS @ 5M (2591x1944)
300 FPS @ 4K (3840x2160)

but then wird with:
H264

the DS1817 suddently has specs and is slighty faster in FPS than the DS918+ which i would also presume...

hmm what is going on? is the DS1817+ faster in deed but just lack of H265 and therefore indirectly lack of 4K encoding (H264 can also go 4K so it does not directly give so much meaning...!?) OR is it just the fact that syn hasn't been testing this because of the DS1817 business orientation?

Hardware transcoding not use for camera. Hardware transcoding specific feature in chip so DS918+ transcode better than DS1817+. DS1817+ only do software transcode. Also that transcode number not for Plex - Plex only support that in latest version if you plex pass member and you need to enable in option. In Video Station it work with no need for option. Do you need transcode video? You need transcode if your device cannot play back file type you use

:?:
DS1817 not support m2 SSD that only on DS1817+
DS1817 and DS1817+ not contain any transcode chip. you sure your media need transcode? it sound like it simply play and not transcode if work fine on older model
