DS1517+ with DX513

Unread post by PacoZafra » Thu Apr 27, 2017 12:58 pm

Hello!
I am thinking in replacing my DS1512+ with a new DS1517+, the problem is that I have a expansion unit DX513 and I would like not to upgrade to the new DX517 (too much money).
¿Anyone knows if the new DS1517+ is compatible with the old DX513?

Thank you!

I believe they're not compatible for some reason.

If bandwidth is the only difference between DX513 and DX517.
The backward compatibility of DX1517+ maybe possible.
I believe if this feature come true, more users will buy DS1517+ for upgrade purpose.

I can't definitively say anything about the DS1517+ since I don't have one, but I was able to use my DX513 on my new DS1817+ with no issue. Since the DS1517+ and DS1817+ are very similar I would think you should not have a problem, the only real downside being the potential loss in bandwidth because of the reported older eSATA version on the DX513.

will it work with one large volume spans across the 2 boxes?

I think it will - the article that Harry Potter presented is like Synology Compatibility list, where there are models an peripherals that Synology just managed to find and test together - as for the the rest - they just did not test due to the lack of sth ...

How did this story end? Is there compatibility between 1517+ and 513?
I have the same problem - my 1515+ died (C2538) and I urgently seek a replacement. But I also have DX513, and the official support says only about the compatibility list.

Help....

No idea, I discarded this possibility because the lack of information and I didn't want to take the risk.

I bought my first 1515+ at an Australian online store. Excellent functionality, I really liked the device. Later I bought DX513, because I work with multimedia content, which takes up a lot of space. Exactly a year later, the "problem 2538" happened, so I bought a new device, but from Italy, since the price in Russia is much higher. After 4 months, the same "2538" - AGAIN. Thank Italian sellers, they will change the device, but this: a) will take some time. b) I do not want to get "2538" again.
There is a chance that 1517+ is deprived of this problem (and Italians are ready to send it to me), but what to do with DX513 ???
By the way, here, in Russia - disgusting support these devices. Devices purchased not in this country dont have warranty support. Literally: "where bought - there repair".

I found this:

(see "Optional Accessories" list! but I'm afraid it's just a typo.)

It may or may not work - but the concern is this. If the expansion cabinet fails and it is part of a disk array you may face data loss and Synology doesn't have to support it...

It depends on what you consider the problem  BTW it has Intel Atom C2538 CPU on board

PS I really doubt its C2538 CPU has C0 stepping

You mean whether DS1517+ is compatible with DX513 or not? I think yes (the only difference is SATA speed - it will be DX513's one)

I don't think so. DS1517+ has 2 eSATA ports and can work with either two DS513 or with two DS213 (not wit four of them, of course  )...

The DX513 works fine with the DS1517+. I had four DS1512+ units that I upgraded to DS1517+. Each has two DX513s attached and I have no issues. I think the only difference is that if you were to upgrade the expansion cabinet to a DX517 you will get twice the data speed between the main cabinet and the expansion. They all use eSATA.
