BTRFS : what the aim in DSM , no dedup, no snapshot ...

Synology is taking a new approach to the architecture of DSM and its packages. As a fully mature operating system, DSM shall focus on the basic tools for running your Synology NAS, meaning other essential services and features can be developed independently with less dependence on DSM itself. This new approach will provide a lighter, more responsive DSM and a better-customized NAS experience.

BTRFS : what the aim in DSM , no dedup, no snapshot ...

Postby ledufakademy » Fri Feb 17, 2017 5:28 pm

hello,

i'm testing BTRFS wirh DSM 6.1 and i 'm trying to take benefit of deduplication or snapshot but for deduplication doesn't work at all !!

copying 3 times the same file always increase disk consumed space ... so there is no dedup !

am i missing someting with DSM btrfs implementation ?

Snapshot is there. Always has. Dedupe is in Hyper Backup not BTRFS

I think your confusing CoW with inline dedup or offline dedup (both of which are not implemented_. You can use BTRFS CoW using Hyperbackup or Filestation for file/folder copy.
