Asked to send admin password in unencrypted email !

Postby francktlv » Wed Sep 06, 2017 9:23 am

Hi there,

A bit of a worry here ;)

I've just been asked by Synology technical support to send a password for an administrator account via... plain unencrypted email. I asked for a public PGP key or any other way to communicate (Wire for ex.) : nop.

Any thought ?

Why would you think they're using unencrypted email?

Any business (let alone one that does tech support) in this day and age should be using encrypted email. If you're using unencrypted email for some reason it's not on them to assume you are.

You can just make a password for the service tech, then change back after he's done.
