expanding a ds216play

Unread post by brlcad » Sun Aug 20, 2017 1:59 am

First time Synology user this year. Loving it! I have a DS216play with 2x4TB (SHR) that I instantly filled up, so now I'm looking to expand. In hindsight, I probably wanted the DS716play but this was a trial run and it was before I really fully understood what the numbering scheme implied, upgrade-wise.

So now I'm debating whether to option(A) tediously upgrade to 2x10TB via dual rebuild (@ roughly $600 and time), option(B) buy a DS416play with a 2x8TB+ (also ~$600), or option(C) get a DS916+ with a 4TB+ (~$700).

My 4TB at post-rebuild utilization and hardware upgrade capacity would be thus:
A) 40% => 4TB of 10TB usable, 0% upgradable
B) 25% => 4TB of 16TB, 47% upgradeable to 30TB usable
C) 25% => 4TB of 16TB, 82% upgradable to 90TB usable w/ DX513

Obviously more capacity and upgradability are desirable so I'm not in this situation quite so soon in the future, but I'm wondering if there's any options or considerations I'm overlooking? Other concerns are noise, power, and future cost, which makes me lean away from C.

Any insights or opinions appreciated.

Cheers!
Sean
