NAS Recommendation

Postby kandrew » Sat May 13, 2017 5:35 pm

Hi, I’m looking for some recommendations for a NAS solution. My existing setup is below. I’m looking for a robust storage and backup solution. I probably will need at least 8TB of total storage (2 or 4 bay). Cloud access to media is not a priority right now, but may want for 2nd backup in the future. Given the makeup of my media (music, movies and photos) use of a imbedded media application might be a good choice. Other considerations for use?

Can anyone suggest what solution I should consider? I’m a newbie when it comes to NAS.

EXISTING SET-UP

Laptop:
Ethernet connected
C Drive Apps – Squeezebox Server, Asset UPnP Server, WD Smartware
Future App? – Roon
Media:
• 4TB WD My Book with music (mp3/Flac) via USB to Laptop
• Backed up to 4TB My Cloud via Ethernet Network
• C Drive currently not backed-up
2 music streamers used connected over Ethernet

Above My Book and My Cloud drives are full.

Desktop:
Ethernet connected
C Drive Apps – Plex Server, WD Smartware
Media:
• Internal 2TB 2nd Hard Drive - Movies (avi, mp4, mkv up to 1080p)+ Photos (1TB of data)
• Backed up to 2TB My Book via USB from Desktop
• C Drive backed up to above 4TB My Cloud via Ethernet Network
Plex accessed via (2) Apple TV’s connected over Ethernet for movies and photos

Think in advance what you want to do and how, include your mid term future requirements.
Then go through the product sheets and specifications.
Don't just listen to people suggesting based on a couple of minutes reading of your existing HW and SW specs.

The most popular models are the 4,5 and 8 bay NASes. The 916+ is a good option.
