Here is how you can do this:
1 Install and run Virtual DSM setup download station here and connect to vpn
Mount downloads folders for the real dsm into the Virtual DSM

2 in the router block all ports to the Virtual DSM network IP except for the vpn port 1194

You now have a download station with VPN and killswith!
Use filebot to move downloads,I have not tried this setup but it should work in teori.

I am giving Deluge a try with the proxy my VPN provides. Deluge also supports force full stream encryption which I've turned on. According to the IP leak test it is showing a different external IP than the DiskStation. I used this how-to to configure my VPN - http://www.best-bittorrent-vpn.com/how- ... ously.html

I use the same method as Talzac but I run the VPN client on my router running Asus Merlin with Policy Based Routing (PBR) w/ Kill Switch. I just put the Virtual DSM IP Address behind the VPN via PBR and mount my primary NAS folders that i need.

Can you explain this a little bit more?
Like I can't find Virtual DSM between the packages for Synology.

Exactly, that's why I'm looking for a solution that does not require virtual dsm for my DS415Play

Any recommendations?

Here is what I did. Made a rule on my SonicWall firewall to drop all bit torrent traffic. I then got my vpn going with all boxes checked off including the ‘use original interface for traffic’

I then connected to vpn and it all works.

I can remote into my note station and surveillance camera etc. if vpn disconnects my sonic wall drops connections for all torrents.

My vpn has been on for 15 days now. No issues.

I've been using proxy settings in Deluge for a while now - I find speeds no different to without it (compared to VPN). However, in the last couple of days it's stopped connecting and gives an error in the Tracker Status.
Any idea?
I did get a new router not long ago but have used it fine since then. Which ports HAVE to be forwarded on it though? Is it just the ports selected from within Deluge or Download Station?

Also, whenever I use the proxy or VPN I can't be 'connectable' to the tracker so struggle to upload anything. Is there any way around that? (Use IPVanish btw)

Why would Download Station not be hidden behind my VPN when I use VPN on my Disk Station? :?:
When I download with Download Station I see the received bytes under in Control Panel->Network Interface-> VPN increasing rapidly.
and the opoenvpn process eats 38% CPU during the download.

BUT the amount of bytes received by VPN is way less than the size of downloaded file?! Does that mean only a part of the download uses VPN?? :?

Can anybody explain? :?:

Is vpn compression on?

I am not 100% sure this explains the difference in downloaded bytes but it makes more sense than part of the traffic going via the vpn and part not.

I realize this response is a bit outdated but I thought it might help someone else to answer you.

How did you assign the Download Station to use the VPN interface?

Glad I found this post. I have been fiddling with this for hours.

As I see it, we are doing everything right. But these basic FW rules doesn't seem to work.

Weird, to have the options, and not actually make them function.

Maybe off topic, but I have installed a headless raspberry pi with vpn and a torrent client with a link to just one folder on the DS. It feels safer, works like a charm and does not directly expose my DS to the internet. Total cost 60 euro and a day of configuration.
Please share if a reply was useful or how the issue was solved, it helps other DS users.

Hi guys, I also wanted to route my downloads through the VPN and the rest of the NAS traffic - via LAN, so it is not limited by VPN's speed and unreliable connection.
I managed to do it with the help of Docker and Virtual DSM.
Yes, it's an overhead, but surprisingly the Virtual DSM needs only little bit of the host resources.
And there was a bug so that when the VPN reconnects the VPN looses its top position in the services order, but apparently it was fixed a couple of DSM releases ago.
Of course ideally I'd like to see a setting to route the app/service traffic via selected network interface, but unfortunately it's not available now.
If you need any details/instructions please let me know.

I'm using DS216+II and PIA VPN.
