Talk:Modifications
This Page needs re-organising - if you have posted something linked to this page, this topic affects you!
First I think synology and Franklin and the moderators are doing an excellent job both in the Wiki and the Forum in supporting both standard content and modding content and keeping it organised and structured...
However, each time I come to this page I cant help but keep feeling it needs tidying up, this is probably becuase synology leave it to us to maintain it. I believe the time has come when it needs a bit of maintenance, please let me know what you think.
Can I suggest some changes and see what everyone thinks.
I propose, including some page name changes as detailed....
1) Obviously the synology disclaimer is first, stays as is untouched other than by synology
2) The overview page, I think this helps get people off the ground and so definately think this should stay number 2 ***make the change as discussed on http://www.synology.com/wiki/index.php/User:Emmis ***
- "Is my NAS an ARM or a PowerPC CPU model"
- "A short list of the more useful 900+ ipkg packages"
- "Files to backup before modifying the Synology Box" - I think this would be more accurately called "Files known to be reset by Firmware updates - beware if you modify them"
3) "The Command Line interface (CLI)"
- "Overview: What is CLI, how do I access it, SSH or Telnet?"
- "How to enable/disable SSH for CLI"
- "How to enable/disable Telnet for CLI"
- "Basic commands to get around the Synology Box using the CLI"
- "Basic commands for the Linux vi Editor"
4) "Backup Mods"
- ... as is
- ... as is
- ... as is
- ... as is
5) "Downloading Mods"
- ... as is
- ... as is
- ... as is
- ... as is
6) "Multimedia Mods" - this should not be a page, it should just be a title, the contents of this page should be extracted in to seperate pages as they are easily missed..
- "How to disable the Synology Multimedia Indexing Engine"
- "How to Install Wizd Media Server"
- "How to Install Zina Media Server"
- "SlimServer on DiskStation (SSODS)"
- "TwonkyVision"
7) "Hardware Mods"
- ... as is
- ... as is
8) "System Managment Mods/work"
- "Disk Related mods" - Just a title for a new section to group disk mods together
- "How to add a second pre-formatted drive to your NAS to copy data from/to"
- "How to downgrade a RAID 1 Volume to Non-RAID"
- "How to give your disks and files a health check and repair basic faults"
- "How to prepare a Hard Disk whilst installed in a Synology NAS"
- "Spindown issues"
- "Easier User Administration"
- "How to enable NFS Service for the Synology Server"
- "Windows Services for UNIX 3.5 Fast Setup Guide"
- "How to create a Recycle Bin (or Trash can) for the CLI rm command"
- "How to generate custom SSL certificates"
- "How to use sub-level folder permissions - move this page to here"
- "Installing Midnight Commander" - I presume this process was prior to fw 598, as on 598 all I did was "ipkg install mc" and it installed everything including the dependents (I also checked the .ipk for PPC's and this also now lists the dependants). I then just typed mc and it worked. including Function buttons, no need to edit the .profile file?? mc itself is also covered in "A short list of the more useful 900+ ipkg packages". So I would propose this mc page is deleted? Or is the process for PPC not as automated as for ARM?
9) "Other Mods"
- "Step-by-step guide to installing Subversion" - see my comments on this page under the section ARM mods
10) "Unsupported configuration changes to synology applications" - a title change
11) "Mods that don't work"
12) "Mods and information specifically for Marvell mv5281 ARM-based Synology Products"
- "Installing bootstrap for the armmarvell models" - As per the discussion at http://www.synology.com/wiki/index.php/User:Emmis This page is to be provided as an option for more experienced users, but it is to be renamed and modified to make it processor independant, and the parent page changed to the overview page.
- "Step-by-step guide to installing Subversion on ARM-based Synology Products" - I think this page should be renamed to just "Step-by-step guide to installing Subversion" and with a few minor mods to the bootstrap section it could be used for either ARM or PPC. Hence I think the newly named page should then be moved to its own section "other mods"
- Compiled_programs_for_Marvell_mv5281_ARM-based_Synology_Products - This page already exists but is hidden by its parrent, I think it should be made more visible by listing it here.
13) "Mods and information specifically for Power PC CPU (PPC) Synology Products"
- Installing bootstrap for the PowerPC models - This process is covered in more detail on the overview page, hence I think this page should now be deleted.
- Installing smartcrl web browser monitoring for PowerPC models - this page contents should be moved to the exisiting compiled apps page for the PPCs and this page deleted.
- Compiled programs for Power PC CPU based Synology Products - This page already exists but again it is hidden by its parent, I think it should be maded more visible by listing it here.
Let me know what you think. I propose that if I have not had any major objections then in about two weeks time (say by the 22/5/2008) I make the changes I propose above.

Yes, I agree that this page is a bit due for a reorganization effort. Your suggestions are good, however for the Management Mods, I would suggest creating another section for disk related mods. Another idea is to create another copy of the mod page in the SynologyWiki:Sandbox where anyone/everyone can suggest edit the mod index to reflect the new organization. Have a good day

Thanks for that Franklin, I have added the section for disk mods to the above so that the above reflects what is currently proposed. I also tried to paste the code of this page into the sandbox but it is not showing?? Could you have a look to see what I have done wrong. Thank you RobinGB 9/5/2008|-
Hi RobinGB. I fixed the error with the Sandbox, it was my fault. I forgot to close the comments... Have a good weekend. :-)
