Tutorial - Location Based connection through LAN and WebDav

Lanandwebdav.jpg

Here I show you how to Map a network folder to the Synology Diskstation never less you are connected through a fast LAN (Local Area Network) connection or connect via Internet through WebDAV.

A.) Prepare Diskstation 1.) Set up WebDAV by clicking on CONTROL PANEL -> WEBDAV and check ENABLE WEBDAV and confirm by clicking on APPLY.

A1 enable webdav.jpg

B.) Prepare the Router for WebDAV Make sure port 5005 and if you want use WebDAV HTTPS Port 5006 are forwarded to the Diskstation. WebDAV is not fast and HTTPS is even slower so I cannot recommend WebDAV HTTPS

If you don’t know how to access your router and set the ports manually you can try to let the Diskstation configure the router for you.

In the Diskstation CONTROL PANEL click ROUTER CONFIGURATION if you have not set it up before you have to click on SET UP ROUTER – when the Diskstation recognised your router click on APPLY. (If the router has not been recognised you might have to setup the port forwards manually.)

If the router is recognised click on CREATE select BUILD-IN APPLICATIONS and click on NEXT. Check all the ports to make sure Port 21, 5000, 5005 (and 5006 if you use HTTPS WebDAV) is checked and click on APPLY. Click on SAVE and then TEST CONNECTION

C.) Prepare Windows The WebDAV settings are quite buggy in Windows 7 (maybe in 8 as well) and need to be changed. Otherwise it mite not work.

I have prepared a Registry File for Window 7. http://kisd.de/~martinb/foren/synology/webdav_fix.reg You can download it, right click the file and select “merge” it will change all the Settings for the registry that I am going to explain now. So if you like you can skip to D.) or continue reading and see what the registry file does.

C2 regedit.png

C1.) First there is a 50MB Limit. So you cannot transfer Files bigger than 50MB. To fix that Click on the Windows Start menu in the bottom left and type in “regedit” in the run field - hit enter to execute. The Registry Editor will pop up.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters 1. Right click on the FileSizeLimitInBytes and click Modify 2. Click on Decimal 3. In the Value data box, type 4294967295, and then click OK. Note this sets the maximum you can download from the WebDAV to 4 gig at one time, I haven’t figured out how to make it unlimited so if you want to download more you need to split it up. In the same windows we are going to make another change. C2.) Secondly the WebDAV connection might not be found on Windows unless you change the settings. to fix it.

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters 1. Right click on the BasicAuthLevel and click Modify 2. In the Value data box (dword), type 2, and then click OK. Source: (in German) http://www.synology-forum.de/showthread.html?14974-Wieso-funktioniert-WebDav-bei-mir-nicht

D.) Setup NetSetMan To automatically switch the mounted network Drive there is a software called NetSetMan that you can download at http://www.netsetman.com/index.php?s=nsm#dl-nsm

Download, Install and Run NetSetMan [b]D1.)Type in a location name on the First Tab "Set0" – like “Office” Select a Network Adapter you use for your Connection. Check “NET DRIVE” and click on the three dots in the same line.

If you are in the same location/network LAN (Local Area Network) like the Diskstation select a drive letter and click on the network folder icon to pick a folder that you like to mount to that drive letter. Check RECONNECT AT LOGIN and hit the “V” Button to add it to the list below

D1 netsetman 2.jpg

Repeat this step until you added all your network folders to drive letters that you like.

Click on ACTIVATE

b]D2.) When you are out of the office, at home or somewhere else connected to a WiFi you can also connect your drive letters to your Diskstation folders. Make a new Profile by clicking on the next Tab saying “Set1” and pick a profile name for it like “at home” or “on tour”

Check “NET DRIVE” and click on the three dots in the same line. Select a Drive Letter and click on the Network Folder Icon to pick a Folder that you like to mount to that Drive Letter.

Now you can type in the WebDAV address to your Folder Like http://diskstationdomainname.net:5005/foldername (sample http://diskstation1.homeftp.net:5005/photo) Check RECONNECT AT LOGIN Check CONNECT USING A DIFFERENT USER NAME and type in the Username and Password for your Diskstation. and hit the “V” Button to add it to the list below

D1 netsetman 4.jpg

Repeat until you added all your network connections

Now its all set and you can manually switch the Network Profiles by clicking on ACTIVATE in NetSetMan.

Or You can enable AUTO Switch based on a WiFi Network in range. Click on that Light Bulb Icon and select ACTIVATE AUTOSWITCH PROGRAM-WIDE and select the WiFi network that you are connected to or that is in range.

Set the NetSetMan to start with Windows so it can switch to the right Network.
