Quick Install Guide: Installing Synology Assistant

Overview

This article will guide administrators into how to install the Synology Assistant on a Windows or Mac computer. The Synology Assistant is a tool which is used to find the Synology Disk Station on a network, install Synology firmware on to the Synology Disk Station, and provide assistance for mapping printers and drives on Windows Computers.

In which situations is it best to actually install the Synology Assistant software, and in which situations is it better/sufficient just to use the "Setup the Synology Server" from the Product Installations CD, which does not require an installation of the Synology Assistent on the harddrive but just runs it directly from the CD]


Note
For the computer which will be finding and installing the Synology Disk Station, please make sure that computer has a wired connection to the network. Using a remote or wireless connection will result in high latency or communication errors - which made lead to complications when finding or installing the Synology Disk Station.


Windows Environment


Step 1:

Insert the Install CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer.

Step 2:

An auto-run menu should be displayed on the desktop. Select Synology Assistant which will install the the Synology Assistant on the computer. Administrative privileges is necessary to install the program, and to adjust any security settings which may exist on the computer (such as Windows Firewall).

  • If a menu is not present, then Auto-run has been disabled on the computer. The menu can be manually executed by going to [Start] --> [Run] and type without quotes "D:\autorunmenu.exe" where "D:" is the letter of the CD-ROM which is holding the Install CD; this letter will vary from computer to computer.
  • Alternatively - browsing through "My Computer" can be used to execute the "autorunmenu.exe" file.

Step 3:

Proceed to Installing the Synology Server.
North American customers which purchased a pre-installed DiskStation may proceed to How to use the DiskStation Manager.


Mac OSX Environment


Step 1:

Insert the Install CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer.

Step 2:

Double click on the CD-ROM Drive icon

Once the CD is opened, open the "MacOSX" Folder

Step 4:

Open the Synology Assistant-SYNOLOGY.dmg file

  • This will mount a Disk Image onto the MacOSX Desktop

Step 5:

On the MacOSX Desktop, double-click on the recently mounted Synology Assistant-SYNOLOGY disk icon

Step 6:

Double click on the "Synology Assistant" icon, which will launch Synology Assistant.

Step 7:

Proceed to Installing the Synology Server.
