Manual Port Forwarding with an Apple Airport Extreme Router

For routers which are not known to be compatible this article will cover the basic idea of Port Forwarding the web service (port 80) on an Apple Airport Extreme. This knowledge may be used for other Apple-branded routers. For further technical assistance with port forwarding, please consult with Apple's technical support or a computer network consultant. Please be sure to read the Aspects of Port Forwarding and Remote Access article before proceeding with this article.

Set the DiskStation to have a Fixed LAN IP Address

Step 1:

  • Login to the Synology DiskStation Manager as administrator

Step 2:

  • Proceed to Network

Step 3:

  • Proceed to Network Interface
  • Select the LAN Port which will have port forwarding
  • Switch to Use Manual Configuration
  • Click Ok and let the DSM Restart the Network Services.

Enabling Port Forwarding on the Apple Airport Extreme

  • Notes about this router in this article's example
    • Name: Apple Airport Extreme
    • Model: A1354
    • Default IP:
    • Default Username: user-defined
    • Default Password: user-defined
    • Firmware: 7.5.1
    • Misc: Requires usage of Air Port Utility

Step 1:

  • Launch the AirPort Utility

Step 2:

  • Let the utility find the Airport Extreme
  • Select the Router and Click Manual Setup

Step 3:

  • Enter the Administrative Password to the Airport Extreme

Step 4:

  • Click Advanced

Step 5:

  • Click Port Mapping
  • Click on the + Symbol

Step 6:

  • From the Drop down list, select Personal Web Sharing
  • Enter the IP Address of the Synology DiskStation.
  • Click Continue to proceed.

Step 7:

  • Enter a Description of this service
  • Click Done when finished

Step 8:

  • Click Update to commit changes to the router.

Step 9:

  • Acknowledge that the router will restart, and network access will be interrupted.

Step 10:

  • Restart in progress...
  • Done
