Unused Space

Postby rfromp » Thu Nov 28, 2013 12:05 pm

Specs:
DS1812+
DSM Version: 4.0-2228
Synology Hybrid RAID

I thought the advantage of using SHR is that disks of different sizes could be used? That is not working for me. I started with eight 1TB drives and then was able to replace two of the 1TB with two 4TB drives. So my setup is now two 4TB drives and six 1TB drives.

According to the Synology RAID calculator, I should have 10TB of available space and 4TB used for protection. But I don't.

See below the screenshots.

In the "Volume Manager Wizard" the option to "Expand the volume with unallocated disk space" is greyed out, so I don't how I can be able to use that unused space. As you can see from above, I desperately need it.

Anyone have any ideas why I'm not getting all of my space like I should be getting, or anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you.

So I'm thinking I'll have to replace the rest of my 1TB drives with 4TB drives before I can expand the volume. Thoughts?

No, 2x4TB disk is enough to get the advantage of shr.
As far as I remember I read once on the forum that performing the data scrubbing could bring you back the unallocated space. If not I suggest to contact Synology support, they will repair it remotely.
