DS414play

Postby xstof » Wed Oct 30, 2013 10:31 pm

I can't seem to find what I'm looking for in the Synology portfolio. I very much like the DS414 (because of 4bay) but disappointed with lack of media capabilities, I love the new DS214play, but disappointed by it having just 2 bays and single NIC.

How about a DS414play? Anything in the works along those lines please?

I would also be very interested in a DS414play, as I think the transcoding hardware would be quite useful. The DS214play is interesting, but I need more than 2 drive bays.

I reached out to Synology America to see if they were aware of any plans in the pipeline. Here is their response:
There are no foreseeable plan for DS414play. I will send your feedback to our product management team for future consideration.

I suggest you also reach out to them so that they know there is demand for a DS414play:

You might have to wait for the DS415play.

I've contacted Synology regarding the 4 or 5-bay variant of the DS214play (i.e. the Intel Atom Berryville CPU based home NAS).
They have appended my request/interest to their NAS model-request ticket, said that I am not alone.
So you, who want such NAS to be released, join us, contact them too!!!
Synology register our interest.

And why would anybody care for transcoding? You wanna watch FHD content on your phone? Isn't it better watched on a nice TV set? Besides, don't expect from this CPU to transcode BD quality material in real time, but it can probably manage some crappy 720p fine. For high quality content transcoding you cannot settle for anything weaker than Qnap's new TS-x70.

jurass99, thank you for your input, but clearly you haven't thought your post through.

For the benefits of transcoding, I will leave this to someone else to explain to you. You suggest a $1000+ product from QNAP to transcode 1080p, so let's assume you're aware of what transcoding is. The fact that NAS manufacturers are working to add transcoding capability to their NASs probably means that someone has found a use for this feature. If you're not interested, I have no idea why you're part of the discussion at all.

If you'd done your research, you would know that the DS214play is currently Synology's only NAS to support full 1080p transcoding. So, unless I see some hands-on reviews that say Synology's claim is a fabrication, then I'm going to go ahead and save my money for a more budget-friendly DS41Xplay at half the price of your QNAP.

from me too.

I can't quite work out why they didn't release this. Well, I can think of lots of reasons, but would have thought there is a high demand.

Had this been around my NAS upgrade decision would be made, but I'll look more closely at QNAP's offerings and see if they've got what I'm after (for a not-crazy price).

Upgrading from QNAP's 209 that's a good few years old now.

DS214play+

Postby speedy67 » Sat Nov 30, 2013 12:48 pm

Hello,

I'm interested by both DS214 plus and play and choice is very hard : video transcoding on one side and hardware data encryption on other side. Would it not be possible to put this two features in an unique product ?
