rsync backup backup to RSync Compatible Server always error

Postby B3rt » Tue Oct 22, 2013 11:18 pm

I try o backup my DS411+II to a remote linux server.
On this server rsync is installed and working.

When i try to make a backup task in DSM 4.3 using make a backup to RSync Compatible Server it always error trying to connect.

It errors soemthing like:
Could not connect with remote server, check the following and try again:
servername or ip, is netwwork backup service enable on target server (strange message, i try to connect to a RSync Compatible Server, this is NOT a synology nas).

Port 873 and 22 are forwarded from my router to my NAS and work.

I can connect using console to remote server and login as user root using same credentials as i use in DSM backup tool. When i run rsync command from the commandline on my NAS to the remote server it works.

I really have no idea what i do wrong or why it errors, it seems the DSM contains a bug...
I even tried 3 other linux (centos) servers, all same error...

I tried to use some manuals how to setup a remote backup, but none of them give hints what could cause this connection error.

The only thing i cannot find or udnerstand is:
Backup Module: The name of the module to use, which is typically found under the "/etc/rsyncd.conf" file on the target server.

On the remote server there is NO rsync.conf present..

Who can give me some advise/tips how to get this to work..

Hi
sampe problem here. I have a DS213j with the DSM4.3 firmware.
Code: Select all
Failed to connect to the destination server.
Please check the following and try again:
The server name or IP is correct.
The "Network Backup" service has been enabled on the destination server (at "Main Menu" > "Control Panel" > "Network Backup").

On my linux server, there appears no error message in my logfiles, but when I enable "Enable transfer encryption" on the DS I get following message:
Code: Select all
Oct 24 04:06:46 zzz rsyncd[9144]: rsync: unable to open configuration file "rsyncd.conf": No such file or directory (2)
Oct 24 04:06:46 zzz rsyncd[9144]: rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at clientserver.c(933) [Receiver=3.0.9]

on the DS this are the error messages:
Code: Select all
Oct 26 10:44:38 DiskStation backup.cgi: netbkp_rsync_execv.c:122 Failed to execute rsync command. source=[], target=[rsync@MYIP::], ret=43
Oct 26 10:44:38 DiskStation backup.cgi: netbkp_check_setting.c:20 Wrong parameter
Oct 26 10:44:38 DiskStation backup.cgi: netbkp_rsync_remoteIP_print.c:252 Wrong Parameter. dest rsync mode with wrong value.
Oct 26 10:44:38 DiskStation backup.cgi: netbkp_rsync_execv.c:290 task parameters wrong.

But when I try this command on my DS: rsync -avze ssh /volume1/Data rsync@MYIP:/home/Data
than rsync is working!
best wishes
chuck

Hi,

I'm having the same problem when creating "Data backup task" in "Backup and Restore" after upgrading the firmware from DSM 4.0-2228 to DSM 4.3-3776-3. Model name RS812RP+

Failed to connect to the destination server.
Please check the following and try again:
The server name or IP is correct.
The "Network Backup" service has been enabled on the destination server (at "Main Menu" > "Control Panel" > "Network Backup").

I have double check the IP address and login details and tried but still same error results.

I tried the rsync command in terminal and it is working fine.

I got this from "/var/log/messages"

Code: Select all
backup.cgi: netbkp_rsync_execv.c:122 Failed to execute rsync command. source=[], target=[root@XXX.XXX.20
backup.cgi: netbkp_check_setting.c:20 Wrong parameter
backup.cgi: netbkp_rsync_remoteIP_print.c:252 Wrong Parameter. dest rsync mode with wrong value.
backup.cgi: netbkp_rsync_execv.c:290 task parameters wrong.

Is there any workaround to this?

Hi,

There is a requirement that is not straightforward enough in the documentation: you need to setup rsyncd on the target server. Otherwise, the Synology GUI won't be able to properly identify the "Backup module" and you won't be able to get to the next step.

As an alternative, it seems you can specify a path (starting with a /) instead of a backup module, but I haven't tried it.

HTH
Cheers

@LeCoyote

Thanks to this you need to setup rsyncd on the target server.

I got an idea of enabling the "rsync daemon" on the target server (Debian).

Here's how
1. Enable the rsync (RSYNC_ENABLE=true)in target server (Debian)
1.1 vi /etc/default/rsync
1.2 change the RSYNC_ENABLE=false to RSYNC_ENABLE=true

2. Create the file /etc/rsyncd.conf
2.1 vi /etc/rsyncd.conf
2.2 append the following then save
pid file = /var/run/rsyncd.pid
lock file = /var/run/rsync.lock
log file = /var/log/rsync.log

[rsync]
path = /rsync
uid = root
gid = root
read only = no
list = yes
auth users = root
secrets file = /etc/rsyncd.secrets

3. Create the rsync share
3.1 mkdir /rsync

4. Create the /etc/rsyncd.secrets
4.1 vi /etc/rsyncd.secrets
4.2 append "root:password", which is in the form username:password

5. Limit access to file owner
5.1 chmod 600 /etc/rsyncd.secrets

6. Restart rsync
6.1 /etc/init.d/rsync restart

I cannot guarantee this will work for you but this help solved below's problem

Failed to connect to the destination server.
Please check the following and try again:
The server name or IP is correct.
The "Network Backup" service has been enabled on the destination server (at "Main Menu" > "Control Panel" > "Network Backup").
