Surveillance Station - High CPU usage

Postby rodef » Tue Mar 09, 2010 1:53 am

With the Beta firmware 2.3-1118, CPU usage was around 5% (Live view source from camera) and around 45% (Live view source from Surveillance Station).

With 2.3-1139, CPU usage is around 45-50% regardless of which live view source I choose.

How do I get it back down to 5%?

Ok, so I have been doing some testing, and the results are very strange:

Live view source: camera
Motion detection (without being triggered) - approx 50% CPU
Continuous Recording - approx 15% CPU !!
No scheduling - approx 10% CPU

Live view source: Surveillance Station
Motion detection (without being triggered) - approx 50% CPU
Continuous Recording - approx 15% CPU !!
No scheduling - approx 8-13% CPU

If I enable motion detecion within Continuos Recording, the CPU usage goes up to approx 60%.

It seems to me that (at the very least) there is something wrong with the motion detection scheduling in the latest firmware.

Hum, I have a similar issue.

DS209 + Panasonic BL-C111 => 10% CPU usage at "idle" (there is no activity in front of the camera ...)
FW 2.3.1139

even at idle the SS is recording or else how do you get the 15 sec or so preview...

Well, with DSM 2.2, the SSD process was barely noticeable. Actually this is when I saw a process using 10% that I tried to find what it was about. And this is Surveillance Station ... Thus, for me, 10% at "idle" is not normal.

There is another post with mixed feelings about SS and I just confirm this version is less stable. I also notice some black flickering in live view, that was not the case in 2.2

I hope Synology will correct this, albeit I admit this is not blocking for me

This is really frustrating. SS has been unusuable for me since upgrading from the Beta firmware to 2.3-1139, because it constantly takes up 50% CPU (as I use motion detection).

I tried deleting and adding the camera and rebooting (about 15 times).

But SS still remembers the motion detection settings for the camera! Does anyone know where the motion detection settings are saved? I would like to telnet into the machine and delete them manualy.

Why are you not upgrading to FW 1141?

Because the changelog does not mention any fixes to Surveillance Station.

And also, this thread (viewtopic.php?f=82&t=22330&start=30#p91656) confirms that the problems are not fixed in the latest firmware.

And I can confirm that 1141 doesn't fix this high load...

We will reduce the cpu usage in the hotfix.

Eric, where is the hotfix please?

I am running 2.3-1157, and CPU usage in SS is around 20-25%. With the Beta firmware 2.3-1118, CPU usage was around 5%.

I only have one camera, but Resource Monitor shows two SSD processes.

THIS... or something very much like it is back in the latest firmware (1337). Using a Panasonic HCM311 Camera.

100% CPU usage on my DS210j (DSM3.0-1337) - 2 * 1TB HD103SJ Drives

CPU usage ranking:
1: ssd (98.98%)
2. rsrcmonitor.cgi(0.97%)
3. scemd(0.00%)
...

The attached camera is currently scheduled only to record on motion (during 'after hours'). The camera is looking at a mostly dark room since the lights are off. FWIW - The ceiling lights auto-turnon when anyone enters the room.

The kicker? This 100% load issue happens when Surveillance Station is set to do motion detection 'using the camera' rather than the 'surveillance station'.

The CPU usage is still very high in firmware DSM 3.0 - 1337 (30 - 35%), using motion detection by Surveillance Station.

With the Beta firmware 2.3-1118, CPU usage was around 5%.

SS just seems to really struggle with motion detection.

Surveillance Station has just had so many problems for over 2 years, I feel like giving up and getting something better.

I have DSM 3.2 1955 and 4 cameras conected to SS motion detection in my SS can be only set up in SS not in camera setings due to compatibility so cameras working now on ONVIV standard only,
CPU useage showing SSD in total 90 % where mostly cameras taking all , hmmm what to do?
it is hard to use Whole server now web serwer is slow due to SSD 90 % , my cameras are Etrovision , Synology recommends them, only thing I have still hope that I red in dsm 4.0 review that my model is now on the compatibility list for DSM 4.0 I will upgrade as soon when they will relase official version 4.0 not beta , any similiar situation guys?
