3rd Party Windows iSCSI Initiators

Postby nbreslow » Mon Mar 15, 2010 6:08 pm

Hi Everyone,

As detailed in another post on this forum I am having a problem booting Windows 7 with the Microsoft iSCSI initiator that is built into the OS. This has led me to look for 3rd party alternatives. While I have found one that works really well for Mac OSX Snow Leopard I am still searching for a Windows 7 x64 one. After searching I have found this one from StarWind:

http://www.starwindsoftware.com/starport-free

It looks promising and I am yet to try it out. I just wanted to post here to see if anyone knows of other alternatives or has experience using the StarPort software with a Synology NAS (I use a DS209+II).

Thanks,

Just wanted to stop back in to let people know that I have had a great deal of success using the StarWind StarPort iSCSI initiator - it is really straightforward and easy to use. My boot-up time is much less than before though occasionally it does take a little while to handhskae properly. All is all I would say it has been an improvement over the MS iSCSI that is built into Windows 7 Pro.

Thanks,

Hi,
Could you please elaborate on your problems BOOTING Windows 7 with the native iSCSI initiator?
I'm about to implement iSCSI at home but haven't done so yet. I thought booting from an iSCSI target required special HW with iSCSI BIOS support, or did I get something wrong here? Maybe you mean that booting Windows 7 takes longer when native SW iSCSI initiator service is started?

Thanks,
Carl

Hi,

I mean that booting Windows 7 with the iSCSI service initiated takes longer. I detailed my problem in a post here:

viewtopic.php?f=147&t=22492

Sorry for the confusion but I am NOT trying to boot from a special iSCSI enabled BIOS, hardware, etc.

Thanks,
