I've posted my question about the RAID setup in another forum. No answer, probably due to being too deep into this thread...

Re: SHR in Beta - detailed description on functionality

Postby almograve » Thu Feb 25, 2010 11:09 am

Hello,

Just ordered a 410j -

I have the following drives that I will "recycle" in the Syno.

3 x 750go
1 x 1,5To

What would it then give me in SHR?

RAID 5: 750 - 750 - 750 - 750

and then what woudl it do with the rest of my 1,5To?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

and then later on, when I will replace 1x750 by a 2To what will it give?

Is there any online tool that would help (like Drobo has one)
Thank you,

Almo

As per my understanding of SHR:
Now you'd get 1 volume of 750GB in RAID5 (just as you mentioned); the rest would be unusable for now.

Once you swap a 750GB for a 2TB, you'd get:
1 volume 750GB in RAID5
1 volume of 750GB in RAID1
500GB unusable

If you later one swap another 750-->2TB (having 750+1.5+2+2) you'd get:
1x750GB in RAID5 (in 4 Discs)
1x750GB in RAID5 (in 3 Discs)
1X500GB in RAID1 (in 2 Discs)
No wasted space.

It would be nice to see someone from Synology confirming this to be accurate.

@PROD@PT

Yup, that looks accurate,

Using the SHR, on a brand new volume (no existing data), the following storage configuration will be available, and as you upgrade one disk to a 2TB disk over time

3x750GB + 1x1.5TB =
4x750GB RAID-5
-------------------
2250GB Redundant Capacity

2x750GB + 1x1.5.TB + 1x2TB =
4x750GB RAID-5
2x750GB RAID-1
-------------------
3000GB Redundant Capacity

1x750GB + 1x1.5TB + 2x2TB =
4x750GB RAID-5
3x750GB RAID-5
2x500GB RAID-1
-------------------
4250GB Redundant Capacity

1x1.5TB + 3x2TB =
4x750GB RAID-5
4x750GB RAID-5
3x500GB RAID-5
-------------------
5500GB Redundant Capacity

4x2TB =
4x750GB RAID-5
4x750GB RAID-5
4x500GB RAID-5
-------------------
6000GB Redundant Capacity

Now I get it! much easier when putting this down on paper :)

The only thing that is still unclear is: Can I swap the disks without having to empty and format every time? I guess yes, because of the redondancy?

Do I need to load all my drives into the 410j to achieve this or 1 by 1 with a specific setup each time?

Ok... I encountered some problemes using the new SHR-functionality...
I started with two disks (1 TB each) and then added another one (1 TB) but i still have 1 TB of total space, according to the volume manager.

mdadm says something different:
Code: Select all
DS> mdadm --detail /dev/md2
/dev/md2:
        Version : 1.01
  Creation Time : Wed Feb 24 18:23:00 2010
     Raid Level : raid5
     Array Size : 1944057344 (1854.00 GiB 1990.71 GB)
  Used Dev Size : 972028672 (927.00 GiB 995.36 GB)
   Raid Devices : 3
  Total Devices : 3
    Persistence : Superblock is persistent

    Update Time : Fri Feb 26 09:18:13 2010
          State : clean
 Active Devices : 3
Working Devices : 3
 Failed Devices : 0
  Spare Devices : 0

         Layout : left-symmetric
     Chunk Size : 64K

Name : DS:2  (local to host DS)
           UUID : e9f64dce:f05eeed0:17544cad:a8d983c2
         Events : 11146

    Number   Major   Minor   RaidDevice State
       0       8        5        0      active sync   /dev/sda5
       2       8       21        1      active sync   /dev/sdb5
       3       8       37        2      active sync   /dev/sdc5

It took a whole day to rebuild the array. Where is the additional space gone to?
And in case it helps: i just installed a new 500 GB drive into the fourth slot and now i can't even enlarge the existing array. all i can do is create a new volume with the new disk.

Please help, and sorry if i posted it in the wrong thread...

Based on your experience, how long do you think it will take to create an SHR volume on the following disks?
3 x 750go
1 x 1,5To

10 hours? more? less?

You cannot add a smaller sized disk within the SHR or even traditional RAID, you must use an equal or larger sized disk.

Based on your experience, how long do you think it will take to create an SHR volume on the following disks?....

1. If you are expanding your volume, all you have to do is replace one disk, repair/expand the volume, replace another disk, repair/expand the volume, and continue until you reach maximum storage capacity of 4x2TB HDD.

2. You can start the SHR volume with 1 disk, and add additional disks as your budget expands.

3. Volume creation speed is a variable, dependent on the disks used, and the performance of the DiskStation. As an example, using 5xST31000528AS in a DS1010+, firmware 1045, with complete consistency check for me took about 5 hours to build a volume.

Hope this helps.

Now I want to upgrate my volume with a third disk ( 1 To samsung ) so, after pluged in the new disk I tried to follow the official process : http://forum.synology.com/wiki/index.ph ... rger_disks

But I can't clic on the " manage" button :D

Thank you so much Franklin,

I'm already in the process of moving all my data out of the four disks,
Then I'll format to SHR asap when receiving and upgrading my 410j on 2.3 on Monday.
I'll then be ready to move the data back.

Nothing ready before Wednesday!:)

On a scale of 1 to 10 how much would give to having a UPS when using SHR? Knowing that in a year in my appartement I've never experience a shortage that I could notice of.

regards,

Arrrg ..Sorry, I didn't saw it before posting ...

I think I have to destroy and rebuild my volume with the 1 To and then the 2x2To.

I've been discussing on this post for the last few days waiting to receive my brand new 410j.
Going for the download of DSM 2.3-1118 I realized that the beta was not completely public :(
I did requested the acess but no idea of how long this will take.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? My 4 HDDs are waiting at home to get my 410j and it would be hard to wait for a long time.
Knowing that the creation of the volume will take 5 to 10 hours it would help to get it fast...

Thank you,

I would always recommend using a UPS, regardless of what type of RAID you use. For me, spending a couple hundred dollars on a UPS already saved my data from damage loss during a snow storm and the ensuing main power stability errors. Data is more valuable than a couple hundred dollars.
