The network path was not found. (53)

Postby Jussi* » Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:47 pm

Hi,

Now I cannot map any network drives with Synology Assistart with 'Map Drive' or straight from Windows Vista Explorer with 'Map network drive'.

After installation of DS 210j all went well and I could map drives okey and files were transferred great. But after shutting DS down and starting DS up again it got new ip-address (DHCP) and then I started to get following information when mapping drives 'The network path was not found. (53). When I took diagnostic of error in Vista it informs you the following:

'Windows confirmed that "ip-address of DS" is currently online, but is not responding to connection attempts at this time.
This usually means that a firewall is running somewhere between the two computers and is blocking "FIle and printer sharing (SMB)". Windows has confirmed that Windows Firewall on this computer is correctly configured to allow this connection. However, a remote firewall migh be blocking your connections.
-> If you have access to this firewall then configure the firewall to allow connections through TCP port 445. If you don't have access, contact your network administrator or Internet service provider. "

I tried to look solutions from different forums (e.g. this one) but suggested actions didn't work. I also followed instructions mentioned in Synology wiki but that didn't help either.

What am I missing?? Should I do some changes to Synology settings or what?

Could somebody help me with this, I really need to fix this to be able to transfer files easily to DS.

Synology Assistant and Web UI works fine and I can get connections to DS with e.g. Tvix 6500 (UPnP and NFS (very slow connection anyway)) and Sony TV (UPnP).

EDIT:
I found an answer to my problem! Because both DS and computer get dynamic IP addresses from ISP they are not in the same subnet anymore. When I changed static IP to computer with same subnet mask and almost same IP address (last digit different) I can map network drives normally. This kind of solution fixed also the speed problem with my Tvix 6500 and DS (static ip to Tvix). Before all streamed data went to ISP and came back and that's why the speed was so slow.

BUT.... I don't want to change my network settings every time from dynamic ip-address to static ip to get computer and DS connected. I need internet connections to both devices. What should I do to build working home network and be able to connect all my devices also to internet? My ISP gives different IPs every time with DHCP when I start computer,Tvix or DS. Then all my devices are most likely not in the same subnet.

Did you configure your DS to use a static IP address? Under DSM > Management > System > Network > LAN > Use manual configuration.
DS410j | DSM 3.0-1337 (from 2.3-1141) | 2 x WD20EARS, 1 x WD15EADS - RAID 5

If you're running a Windows operating system, have a look at this solution:

I had this same issue for 2 days without any hope in sight. After taking my time studying my computer configuration, I realized that my AVG firewall was blocking the program Synology Data Replicator 3. As it was difficult to add a program to the AVG firewall, even after some trial and error, the best method to enable access to this program is to let the system run some updates (this was after a new Windows install) and restart the system a few times when restarts are required. After a few system restarts, and some patience, I opened Synology Data Replicator 3 and voila! AVG asked if this program should be allowed full network access.

If AVG Internet Security (full version) is what you have, this is probably the issue that is blocking you from access to your NAS. If not, it is most likely another 3rd party firewall software, such as Norton, Mcaffee, Kapersky, Norman, or Panda, or any other powerful Internet Security firewall software which isn't from Microsoft. These programs are die-hard for protecting your system, so consider this to be your problem unless you have no 3rd party firewall installed.

System:
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
Service Pack 1 (New install of Windows no updates yet, just motherboard drivers, sound, video, and a few office programs)
Main HDD configuration: Raid 10 4x drives.
Backup solution: Synology DS210j NAS server
----
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit
3.2Ghz Windsor AMX X2 (Dual-core)
4GB RAM
Main HDD configuration: Raid 10 4x drives 750GB running 1.5TB active Mirror + Stripe Equal
Backup solution: Synology DS210j NAS server on RAID 1 2x drives 2TB each Mirror

check DiskStation's firewall and try disabling it, it may be enabled.

if you are having problems with switched off the firewall, delete all rules and tag allow all instead of deny all.

When I initially setup my 212j I did not setup remote access and was able to map the network drive with no problems. I then setup remote access using http and everything was working as normal. I then decided to setup remote access using https and screwed up a ton of things. I finally got my remote access working again just using http but then I got the 53 error.

All my google searching found was to enable all items in the Synology firewall, which worked. But which service is it? I cannot believe it was working fine with only the items I was using for remote access selected in firewall but stopped working when I messed with the ez internet setup and https access.

Would love to know exactly which service(s) it is in firewall so I could just allow that instead of all.

Thanks
